McElhinney/McElhaney - Fern Look Up
« on: Friday 18 March 05 19:21 UTC (UK) »

Looking for information on my great grandmother's family (Mary McElhinney/McElhaney, b. Dec 31, 1866, believe in Moville, Co. Donegal, d. 1940 in Massachusetts, USA).  Her parents were HUGH McELHINNEY/McELHANEY and ELLEN FERN.  I'm told her parents, as well as several siblings remained in Ireland.  My great grandmother, and two brothers, immigrated to Massachusetts in the late 1870's - early 1880's.

Any information on Hugh and Ellen, and siblings of Mary, would be greatly appreciated (birthdates, parish name, townships, married names, ANYTHING).

Thank you.

Not sure if this is a lead for you. My GG Grandmother was Mary Mc Elhinney (many ways to spell) She was married to a George Montgomery and I believe they married in 1869. Both from Ireland but I have no confirmed birth or death dates. What I do no is that they had a son George Montgomery in 1873 in Milford, Co Donegal county. He later married Mary Bett in Scotland on the 4th of June 1897 and later immigrated to New Zealand. I have no record of Mary having sisters or brothers but that could just mean I haven't found any as yet. Is my Mary possibly the Mary you are looking for. If I remember anything else I'll post you again. thanx

Hi, although I'm not adding anything to Kandddad's origininal post I am interested about McElhinney's in Donegal myself and wanted to know how Mary got the civil registration?
I am Julia McElhinney, grt granddaughter of William McElhinney who emigratted to NZ in 1908 from Carndonagh Co. Donegal and I haven't found any records for him yet (nb. 100year anniversary party next year in NZ if anyone interested...)

His father was Jimmy (James) McElhinney who was known as Jimmy the meen (mean by name not by nature) as he lived on a farm next to the Meenahoner stream (spelling?).
His brothers were Dan (the Loch) and Gerry (the Bunnerer).

James married Mary Dougherty and their children were Margaret, Ann, Mary, William (moved to NZ), John (moved to Oz), Sarah and Kathleen.
I have no more info than this and would love to find out where the rest of the family went and go back a bit further with the members I do have. I don't have any ages, dates of birth or official documents - which I would love.
Any suggestions?

Hi Kiwijulia

These might be yours
Phillip Mc Elhinney born 3 Mar 1878. Menahonar, County Donegal Ire
John   Mc Elhinney born 7 Jun 1876  Meinahonar, County Donegal, Ire
Parents James and Mary Mc Elhinney ( Doherty ) variant to Dougherty.

Marriage for James and Mary.  18 April 1875, Cardonagh, County Donegal, Ire

It might pay to PM Mary as I'm not sure where she obtained Civil registration from.

Cheers

Hi Julia

You sound just like me when someone has found information for me. Cheesy

No secret where the source came from Grin, If you have a look on http://www.familysearch.org you may even find others you are looking for. I've tried the alternate name spelling for Mc Elheney and havent managed to find any other names. That doesn't necessarily mean they're not there but I am known for not reading instructions and other members have come to the rescue. Have a play around on the site and if you have any problems just let me know.

Cheers

I have recently due to the pilot exercise on LDS found the death and marriage of my Irish Gt Grandmother.  Also from the 1901 census I found that she was born in Donegal and that her name was Sarah not Mildred (which I'd got from my Grandfather's birth cert).

However using IGI (an extracted record) it appears her parents were Andrew Gaily and Anne McElhinay.  There are other children with Andrew and Anne as parents with a variety of spellings for Gail(e)y and McElhenny.

My question (I suppose) is does this Anne fit with anybody elses McElhinney family.  I don't know when or where she was born or when or where she married Andrew Gail(e)y.

I posting this as new thread with Gail(e)y as the surname as well.

Hi Cyril,  When was your G Grandmother married ?
My GG Grandmother was Sarah Boyle (ms McElhinney + Var)
she was b 1820 and died 1875.   I'm still unsure of what denomination my GG G/Mother was before she married James Boyle (all their children where RC) This family lived in Killhill,Bellanascaddan,Nr Letterkenny,Kilmacrenan Parish.

I've a list of McElhinney + B/M/D's - perhaps I can help you out?

My Gt Grandmother (Sarah Gailey) was married in 1899 in Dublin and in the 1901 Irish census is shown as CofE.

It was her mother (according IGI) who was Anne McElhinay.  Sarah appears to have been born in 1869 in Donegal but I'm not sure where.  I haven't received Sarah birth cert yet.

I suppose Anne must've been born 1851 or earlier but probably no earlier than 1820.....(not much of a range  Embarrassed)

Cyril, Found a marriage for Andrew Gailey 31 December 1846 in Gortee, Co.Donegal..  he was married to an Anne Gailey - don't know if Gailey was Anne's maiden or Surname? and it may be a tad too early to be your Sarah's Parents?
