Hello William James,
You were searching for a John Smith born Sydling about 1839. I have this person on a family tree of a friend of mine.  He (John Smith) was one of about 10 children born to Edward Smith and Ann nee Durnford at Sydling.  Edward was son of Henry Smith and Ann Maynard who married at Sydling 30.4.1797.
One of John Smith's brothers was Henry born 1848 who married Anne Dawes. Henry was the grandfather of my friend.
I have as your John's occupation 'sweep'.
In the 1871 Census of Sydling there was John Smith 32, wife Frances 32 (from Cerne), Alfred 10, Ann 8, Christopher 4 and Rachel 1.

Hello William James,

I tried to get in touch with my contact but have had no reply - he's disabled so perhaps unwell.  I would give you his e-mail address, but not through this site. Contact me by personal message.
By the way, John Smith and wife Frances appear in  1861 and 1871 censuses, but in 1881 the wife appears as Annie, aged 43 born Sydling - children are Christopher, Rachel and Matthew M. Smith aged 7.  John Smith is a sweep, assisted by son Christopher.
