Hi,
I'm looking for Amos Beeby, but he was illiterate, so has several spellings for Beeby: Beebee, Beeby, Beebe.
Unfortunately, his ages through the censuses aren't consistant. Here's an approximate summary:
Amos Beeby, b 1824/25 (1816?), Agric Labourer, born Keysoe, Beds
Mercy/Mecy/Mary J, wife, b 1824/5/7, born Eaton Socon, Beds
Thomas, son, b April 1848, Brampton Ash, Huntingdonshire
Amos and Mercy(?)Jane married in 1847 in the Huntingdon district (prob. Brampton) and her maiden name was Baker. His name is spelt Beeby and his father is "Isaac Reynolds". Can't work that one out!!!!!
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Amos' age looks unusually consistent to me! 36 in 1861 - 46 in 1871 - 56 in 1881 - 67 in 1891, all born Keysoe. I can't see him in either Keysoe or Brampton in 1841. Hunts 1851 has not been released yet on CDrom so it's a case of microfilm for this one. Possibly you got the 1816 date from the IGI - the entries for Amos are member submissions which are to be taken with a large pinch of salt!
Only by checking Keysoe parish register will you sort out his parents. The IGI does not seem to be fully transcribed for Keysoe. Perhaps he was illegitimate and gave the name of his natural father when he married.
Mary/Mercy Jane seems more of a problem. In 1861 she was Mary J 36 born Brampton; in 1871 Mecy J 46 born Brampton; in 1881 Mercy 56 born Eaton Socon; and in 1891 Mary J 67 b Eaton. I wondered to start with if mary had died and Amos remarried Mercy, but the 1891 entry blew that theory out of the water! I don't know if Mary/Mercy were interchangeable names as someone else on the Beds board recently came across the same thing. I couldn't see a Mary/Mercy Baker of the right age in Brampton in 1841.

You were busy!  Thank you for all that work! How can you find out which areas are transcribed by the IGI? The only IGI info I've seen has been on the Family Search LDS website.
MJ, is Mercy in the IGI for Thomas' baptism, but I also see a death registration of a Mercy Jane Beeby, 74, in June qu of 1902, Edmonton (maybe I should order it - none of my family can read her name on the wedding cert). I really trawled through addresses of relatives to search for her in the 1901 census, but couldn't find her anywhere (using Ancestry.com). Most of them are in Tottenham by then. As for 1841, I wonder if MJ is in Bedfordshire still - I'm assuming that Eaton is her birthplace - her father is William Baker, a tailor.
Could you give me the household info for 1861?

The IGI, as you say, is on the LDS site, but is far from being comprehensive and for Hunts and Cambs is pretty sparse for controlled extracts which are the only reliable entries, and even those should be checked against the parish register. But any entries which state in the Message section "Record submitted by a member of the LDS church" should be treated very circumspectly - you will see that both Eliza and Joseph are on the IGI as being baptised in Ellington.
Beds is pretty complete up to 1812, but there are gaps after that, and I don't think Keysoe is complete. You can get an idea from Hugh Wallis's site

The death entry you have found in 1902 fits perfectly - but I can't find her in 1901 either!
I've been through Eaton Socon in 1841 without any trace - although it's a fairly large parish any the quality was none too great, so I can't guarantee that I didn't miss it! I couldn't see William Baker in Brampton either

To anyone who stumbles across this post again:
I have laid my own eyes on Amos and Mercy's wedding cert and discovered that Mercy Baker was, in fact Mercy Jane Bales - father William Bales, tailor. She even signed Bayles, while Amos used his mark.
So don't assume that the name in the GRO reference index is always correct. You need to read the cert for yourself!
To further prove that the name was Bales, I dug into the witnesses and found that John and Anne Eayres were also John and Anne Eyres (Ayres) of Brampton and that her maiden name was....Bailes.
Now I'm off to see what can discover about the Bales family and where Mercy's folks are on the internet!!
