Does anyone know anything about  the Old Workhouse as relatives of mine Charles Haines and family from Hartpury were living there in 1841 Thank you Sue

Hi Sue,

I do not know if it will help you but this site might be worth a look.

Kind Regards,

Hi Sue.

I have only just noticed your enquiry - hence the delay.

To the best of my knowledge the Old Workhouse was at Slopers Farm, Corsend Road - right next to where I live.

The 1841 Census is the only reference I have found to it being a Workhouse.  In the 1840 Tithe Apportionment what was then called Slopers House was divided into four and each quarter had a separate garden.  This arrangement seemed to persist in the 1851 Census although it wasn't named at all.

In the Hartpury Estate map of 1784 Slopers Farm, together with Littles (now Corsend) Farm, was tenanted by William Okey.

If you want any further information (or can provide me with any!) send me a Personal Message
