Hi there
I'm looking for Naomi Smith who was married to Fred Gowler at St. Neots in Sept 1871. I have managed to find her back to the 1871 census and then I am stuck. Any info would be gratefully received, thanks, mooncrystal

Hi Mooncrystal
Welcome to Rootschat. It would be very helpful if you could post the 1871 census details along with any from the marriage certificate that you have. This will make it easier for people to know where/when to look for her ie. when/where was she born, parents names/address etc..
Best wishes

I've managed to find Naomi Smiths parents they are Samual Smith of Offord Darcy born about 1809. Her mother is Susannah Selby of Stukeley, Hunts born about 1811. They were married at Little Stukeley in 1831. I have found the family on the 1851 census for Offord but I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on how to find their parents (Naomi Smiths grandparents) Ta Ruth

Hi Ruth
Nice to be able to reciprocate.
1841 HO107/454-05 Folio 6B Offord Darcy Samuel Smith 30 ag lab Susan Smith 25 William Smith 9 Jane Smith 7 John Smith 3 Sarah Smith 1 All born in Hunts
Not sure if you have them in 1861 but if you need details just ask - but it confirms ages 52 and 49 born Offord Darcy and Stukeley
There were other Smiths in Offord Darcy but none old enough to have been Sam's parents. The same goes for Little Stukeley with Selby. I can pull off details if you would like them. I noticed a Saby in Stukeley as well - I know from my Beds Sabeys that it can be written Selby, so bear this variation in mind.
It appears as though Lt Stukeley parish register has recently been put on the IGI with a "C" batch number but no source call number - but it states that it is a controlled extract so it should be reliable. There's a Susanna Selby christened on 29 May 1814, dau of John and Sarah Selby, which might be her, although it is a couple of years out. There are 3 other children of this couple also christened in Lt Stukeley.
Offord Darcy parish registers are not on the IGI but there appears to be some interest in your Samuel as there are 2 member submissions for him, which you can safely ignore! However both Offord Darcy and Lt Stukeley parish registers have been filmed by the LDS and are available on order at your nearest LDS family history centre, which is probably your best course of action. Seeing who were the witnesses at the 1831 wedding might also provide clues.
regards
David

Hi David,
I remembered seeing a Selby when I was looking through the Ramsey parish records. Although John and Sarah Lovel were married at Little Stukeley that might be where the bride was from. I have managed to find a John Selby son of William and Elizabeth, who was baptised on 4th Jan 1789 at Ramsey. There aren't any Selby's living in Ramsey at the time of the 1841 census so they must all have moved somewhere else. This John looks quite promising anyway, thanks, Ruth
