Robert Bell of Macclesfield
« on: Saturday 19 March 05 22:27 UTC (UK) »

I am researching Robert Bell born in Cheshire around 1827 who married Emma Henrietta Goodwin in 1848 St Peter Prestbury nr Macclesfield.

In 1850 the family are living at Pearl Street Macclesfield with Harriot Maria the first child I believe.

Emma Henrietta died in 1865 at Macclesfield at the age of 40 and by the time of the 1871 census all the Bell family are living in Manchester.

This is where it gets interesting.................!

When I find them in 1871 Robert has a new wife called Mary Ann aged 36 with a further 5 children. The youngest children aged 4-9months are understandable but the second eldest child William was born in Manchester in 1861.

I have yet to find a birth for William in Cheshire or Lancashire and also have no idea of the movements between 1850 and 1871.

I have been unable to find Harriot in the 1871 census, she is not with her father. Harriot was married in 1872 and gives her address as 6 Swan Street Manchester so I think she should be in Manchester somewhere .................

If anyone has any ideas  Grin

Regards

Hi Sarah
Cannot help much with the pre 1871 Manchester census's but there are two possibles for Williams on freeBMD 1861 and 1862.
I believe that Robert Bells parents and siblings moved to Manchester sometime between the 1851 and the 1861 and that Emma could have had William when she was visiting there ? Her own mother having died 1857 aged 57.

Hi Peter,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, so much has been dug up !!!

First of all it goes to show you that you should look along the street/road to see who else is living there I totally missed the Roberts family on 1871 but it is important.....!!!

Look at all those extra children you have found, blimey all this could take lots of time researching more Bells..........I am really "chuffed" as little mint balls.

Thank you very much Peter
