Hi
Does anyone know anything about the Hurst family of Melford (I think, Long Melford) in Suffolk in the mid-nineteenth century? I'm particularly interested in Margaret, born in Lancashire. I'm trying to find out her maiden name. But anything on the Hursts or the Thurstons of Melford would be greatly appreciated. I've got really stuck with Margaret.

Hi Chris Welcome to Rootschat....I am sure you will find us a great group of people keen to try to help but alas in order for us to be able to help you we do need all the available information. Can you tell us more about these people and what it is you would hope to find? Do you have census entries for them? I am afraid that without providing more information on these people (Names When and Where born etc) you are unlikely to get much result. Please tell us more.....Kris

Kris
hi
What I have so far is this:
From the 1881 census - Margaret Hurst, born Rufford Lancashire. She married Robert Hurst. She had children named Alexander, Bernard H., Frederick J., Charles W., and Robert B., that I know of. She (Margaret) was born in Rufford, Lancashire, in about 1829.

Kris,
I think you might be a genius. Thank you!
I never thought to look for other spellings. Wow. I know that's the right family - the Christian names are all right, including Bernard, who became the local church organist. Here's a fascinating entry from a local paper: March 2nd 1886 - As George Cant the landlord of the Black Lion, Melford, was driving in a horse and cart near the Conduit accompanied by Mr B.Hurst the organist, the horse fell, both occupants were precipitated on the ground. Mr Cant received a broken arm." http://www.foxearth.org.uk/1885-1886BuryNorwichPost.html
Thank you, Kris. You've been a huge help. Thank you. I'm truly astonished that there are people out there like you who help out of pure kindness. It's great to know. Thank you. Your efforts have made a real difference.

Kris,
I've just got to say, before I go to bed, thank you. I don't know how you found that, but it's great. Thank you. I'l be looking into all of this over the next few days, and I shall certainly be getting back to you. Right now, you're my hero. Thanks.

I still haven't gone to bed. You were right - I love it. Wow. thank you. I've been in tears over the last few minutes. You should feel very proud of yourself, Kris. You've done a fine thing.
By way of thanks, I'm going to let you in on a story. I'm doing this search on behalf of my father, Peter. He, until recently, wanted to know nothing of his family history. The reason is that he knew only this: his mother killed herself when he was an infant. He was sent back to his nominal father (not his real father) by taxi cab in the middle of the night (fare unpaid) in the wrong end of London's East End. He was raised by his nominal father and his stepmother, who both knew of his parentage but who never told him. Dad only found out his history a few years ago. The only relative who knew any of this was my formidible Great Aunt Geraldine- she died in the mid-nineties, and Dad, having never wanted to know, was left without the story. Now, at 70 years, he wants to know where he came from.
You've really helped, Kris. I think we're getting there, now.
thanks forever for giving us back some of our history,
Chris Smith

You're a star, mate. Now I'm definitely off to bed. Just one more thank you before I go. My Dad is sleeping over in the UK now (I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada). But I know he's going to be knocked out in the morning when he sees this stuff. Wow. Wow. Wow. You are a star. You don't need to bother doing anything for the next fifty years - you've done something really special right here.
My thanks,
Chris

Chris We have some pretty horrific stories on my Grandparents also....We have learnt much about Mums family (She is 87) She seems to have blotted it all out she never knew what happened to her parents always said they died and we knew she went into service -lost contact with half her siblings...Became a nurse her hospital was bombed during the war so with no reason to stay she heard of the shortage of nurses so emigrated. We now know she had more siblings than she remembers...Her and her siblings went into a workhouse in Essex "In an impoverished condition" Her mother had tried to support them by playing the Melodian in the streets...Her mother left them there presumably never to return! and we now know had a couple more kids and also that her father was imprisoned for theft ...Thank goodness for the records of Barnabus homes we now know these things and have all the names of mums siblings which we think is just great She was fascinated that we found some of cousins but in general she really doesnt care...Sad but mum being a right proper English Lady it must have been to much for her when her father went to prison and her mother deserted her so in her mind they died and that was that...
Anyway enough sadness...Here is Charles in 1891 census Will keep looking for more

Tell you what, Kris. I live here on the shore of a quiet lake in rural Nova Scotia. Mostly just us and the wildlife. Though I'm fascinated by my family history, I feel more strongly about the animals. Do you ever get that feeling? We watch the beavers here all summer long. They seem to have a load more sense that us lot. I'm really ambivalent about human-kind. We're not all that great. But, given we're blessed or cursed with this intelligence of ours, I'm glad that some of us can use it for good. At least, if we know who we are, and where we came from, we might have half a chance of doing something right in the future. I'm not sure what I'm saying, other than that hearing from you has been a great experience. It's done something good for my opinion of humanity. Loads of Nova Scotian good-will heading your way. And Cheltenham good-will (that's where I grew up).
Thanks, kris,
Chris Smith
p.s. My life is also a bit more complcated that the norm. If you want to know, I'll tell you. I feel awkward asking about your Grandma. A lot of people from that generation seem to have gone through some terrible experiences. Like my Dad, it seems your Gran just didn't want to know. I can understand. We. the people of the affluent west, are so lucky. We have it all. We want to fly to Bali, we can. Madrid? No problem. Miami? A short flight. I'm very much in awe of the generation that lived through the war, your Gran included. My parents and grandparents also included. They were better people than us. I'll sign off here, but.. thanks again, Kris.

Your Still Up Chris! Ive been off and got my Dinner and U R still Here....It does sound like a lovely place u live...never seen a beaver but I must say I love a Canadian Movie....One with lots of scenery...So lush so Lovely...I live in Rural SA almost dessert country (U would say it is dessert we dont go that far...LOL) My town has a small Population today but in its heyday it had a bigger population than Adelaide...hard to believe if u could c it now...Our history is Mining... These days just tourism...The Cornish and Welsh miners came in droves and What must have they though when they arrived...Housing was scarce so they dug into the side of a dry creekbed and lived there till the floods came and washed them all away....So much disease though the unsanitary living conditions and so much loss of life....Entire families wiped out....The company then decided to build cheap accomodation but still The Company Doctor didnt even treat females only Employees of the mine and their sons..the future employees ...Glad I missed those days for sure....I Tell my Kids things about when I was young and they cant believe it...the long gone family values how we were terrified to do a thing wrong for fear of being sent off "The Naughty Girls Home" and now to have discovered what happened to mum and that was just so tragic no wonder she chose to forget it all cant say I wouldnt do the same given her possition and now you cant bluff the kids with anything they just tell u exactly where to go and move out....Im with you the animals are far less trouble....Its Been my Pleasure ....Take Care and I had better get back to your lookup...LOL...Kris
