SALTER, POWNEY & EATWELL in Calne
« on: Monday 21 March 05 09:50 UTC (UK) »

I have just started looking at these names, with some success back as far as 1871 census.

I wondered whether anyone else is researching the same?

Henry SALTER (b ?) married Mary Anne EATWELL (b 1832) in Sep 1852 in Calne and had children: Ann 1856, William 1858, John 1860 Henry 1865 and James 1872.  All born Calne.

Fanny and William EATWELL are in Calne in 1871 - are these Mary's parents?

Henry SALTER's son Henry marries Mary Ann POWNEY (b 1867 Falkland Islands) in Sep 1889.  Their children are Hubert S 1890, Mildred 1891, Ivan 1893, Roland H 1898 and Bernard 1900.  Again all b Calne.

Would be interested to hear from you if you recognise any of these names, or can help with early censuses.

Thanks

1851 census Calne living in Cow Lane,  I found Henry Salter 24 Ag. Lab. Bromham, Wilts.
He is living in the same household as
SALTER George 44 Drover & Ag. Lab. Bromhill*
Eliza 43 Bromham, Wilts.
Ralph 13 At Home Bromham, Wilts.
Jane 11 Scholar Bromham, Wilts.
William 9 Scholar Bromham, Wilts

*Bromhill is possibly Bremhill which is near Calne

I did not see a Mary Ann Eatwell who was of an age to be married a year later, the only one was aged 4!  There was also a Mary Eatwell aged 9

Hope this helps in a small way
regards
Mary

Thank you for that Mary!  Smiley

I wonder whether Henry and George are brothers, or if George  & Eliza are his parents?

I'm amazed that EATWELL is such a popular name!  I don't suppose you saw Fanny & William at all?  Haven't got around to looking for a birth for her yet.

This is a distant twig of my family, but intriguing none the less and I appreciate your help.

Thanks again,

Hi Arran...Cheryle.f here .Well  George aged 24 and Henry aged 14 were not anywhere near Calne in the 1841 census . No Salter families to be seen and no Eatwell families either!!!! I've only looked at Calne itself mind you not on the outskirts yet. I'll keep you posted if i find anything.     best wishes cheryle.f

Hi Cheryl.f!

Thank you also for your time. Much appreciated.  Smiley

I wonder if they are in Bremhill or Bromham?

From Mary's info, I think George would be 34 (or a very young father!! LOL)

I'm off to look up some births...

Yes sorry Arran....just trying to see if you were paying attention!at this late hour. I can subtract 10 from 44 normally and come up with 34 but when you've been hunting for names that seem familiar to you for hours anything becomes possible.
I'll keep my eyes open anyway. Good Hunting! Smiley cheryle.f

Hi Arran

Unfortunately, the 1851 census that I have seen is just a transcription and it doesn't give relationships  and so cannot help you there.

As to the Eatwell name, it is very common in the area of Wiltshire in which you are looking, so Mary A could be from any of the contiguous parishes.  She may not be with her parents either,  as she could have been working away from home. Have you found her  on a later census?

Mary

Hi Arran, me again!!
How about this -  1841 census Studley. Bremhill. (Which is near Calne)

George Salter, 35, ag lab. born in County
Eliza Salter 34, born in County
Henry Salter 14 born in County
Elizabeth Salter 12, born in County
Harriett Salter 11 born in County
Ralph Salter 3 born in County.

Looks as though George could be Henry's brother
I did look in Bromham which is where Henry said he was born, but there were no Salters there in 1841.
bye, Mary

Mary, I am so impressed!    Shocked Thank you very much.

I have been unable to save the census I found for Mary Anne Eatwell, but I have her on all of them from 1871 if I remember correctly.

At different dates she has lodgers:

1881: a Fanny Eatwell b 1814 Monkton and

1871: an Elizabeth Eatwell b 1795 Tytherton (?)

living with her.  No relationship is given, but I am surmising that they are elderly relatives and possibly one is her mother.  Fanny is with husband William in Calne in 1871.

The ages of the Henry & George SALTER you have in 1841 is proportionate to those in 1851.  Could they not be father and son?

Thanks again

Hi Arran

sorry  yes could be father and son, my maths seems to be up the creek!!  I was thinking there was only ten years between them and not the 20/21.  I'd better go back to school! Embarrassed

Had look on the BVRI for any Mary Ann Eatwells ,  christened in the Calne area.  There was only this one christened in Calne, but she seems unlikely as  she isn't old enough to marry in 1852, unless of course the baptism was an adult one

Thanks Mary  Cheesy

I had a look at the IGI (with all due caution!) and found a Mary Eatwell, parents Elizabeth and Thomas.  Elizabeth lodging with MA from 1881 census could just about be this one?

Also found  a William, son of Thomas and Elizabeth EATWELL bap Calne 25 June 1826 which amatches nicely with the one on the 1871 census.  Can't find him marrying a Fanny though.  This would make Fanny MA's sister in law.

Major leaps of faith involved here!  Really appreciate your time.

My grandfather was Harold Roland, son of Henry Salter and Mary Anne Powney.

Mary Anne was born 30 August 1866 in Falkland Islands, but birth was not registered until 1867,  I think, on her return to Wiltshire.  She died 12 January 1954,  in Bristol I believe.

Henry Salter married Mary Anne in the Calne parish church on 2 July 1889. Mary was 22 and Henry 24.

Their children were -

Mildred b 1891
Ivan 1893
Bernard (b?)
Marjorie (b?)
Harold Roland b 1898
Margaret Amy (b?)
Rene (b? - but was the youngest) aka Katie

Hubert is unknown to me, although I have heard there was another son who died young.

Mildred and Margaret both emigrated to USA, and Margaret's children, Sylvia and Mary live there, so I could check further details.

Hope this helps.

Hi Hoppingmad

Welcome to Rootschat!

It sounds as though you are much better informed than me!  I was researching this branch for my aunt and haven't looked at it for ages - must have another go and see where I get to.

I'm interested that you think the birth was registered in the UK rather than the Falklands - wasn't fancying my chances of a look-up there & haven't got good sea-legs, so not planning to go and find out myself!

Will return to this in the morning.  I hope you will find things on Rootschat to help you with your research also.

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Thank you Arranroots, please keep in touch. I shall try to find more detail from the extended family.

There is a legend (?) that Henry Felix Powney, Mary's father,  having returned from the Americas via the Canary Islands, on SS Great Britain, (presumably about 1867)  dumped all the family at Henry's sister's houses at Bremhill.

My mother, who spent some time as a child with her grandmother, said that when Mary was upset, she would lapse into Spanish. There is also a tale that the family house (quite large I understand) at Bremhill passed to the Spanish (Canary Is ?) branch of the family while the Salters were in the Americas after foundering at Falkland Is.,  as they were assumed to be lost.

Hi

I can give you a little info on The Powney’s if it will help you in your search

Henry Felix Powney  m Eliza Sheveland in San Carlos, Falkland Islands in 1859
My husband who is the Great-Great Grandson of Henry recalls being told that Eliza was in fact Lady Eliza Sheveland – although this has never been proven.

They had the following Children
Sarah Powney b 1863
John Henry Powney b 1864
Mary Ann Powney b 1866
(Eliza) Alice Elizabeth Powney b 2nd Sept 1868 (ironic as tomorrow’s date is 2nd Sept)
James Sheveland Powney b 2nd Sept 1868

Now Eliza passed away in 1868 and it is my belief that she died when she gave birth to the twins.

I notice that hoppingmad has filled you in on several bits and pieces – I too believe that Henry abandoned his family – he died in 1914 aged 75 –  Q2 Apr – May – June  District Bristol – 6a 36.

The family can be seen on the 1881 Census as living with their Aunt & Uncle Joseph & Elizabeth Ponting at Bremhill, Wiltshire.  RG11/2035.

Hope that any info will be of a help to you.
