Eliza Kerwick or O'Keffe
« on: Monday 21 March 05 17:13 UTC (UK) »

I'm looking for anything on this lady, born in 1828, possibly christened in St. Mary's, Limerick on 1.9.1828.
The one I'm after married William Fisher Longmuir in Scotland and had a daughter, Charlotte in 1860.  HH

Do you know if she was a catholic or protestant,
I checked the www.familysearch.org website and found the baptismal record that you have for her in St. Mary's cathedral, St Mary's is a protestant cathedral so if you know her religion you will know if it was her.
hope this helps

I've since discovered Eliza's death in Dundee on 3.4.1882. She was first married to Edward O'Keefe, a blacksmith. I presume that was in Ireland, but I have no trace of her subsequent marriage to William Fisher Longmuir, or any information about why and when she came to Scotland. Her father was William Kerwick, a candlemaker and her mother, Ann (nee Courtney).
Any further info. gratefully received.

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Have you tried going through the Scottish census' the above link is where they are held, if she died in 1882 then she should appear on the 1881 census. It is a pay-per-view site but is not too expensive.

It was quite common for Irish people to leave for Scotland, I have many on my tree that did it.

Hope you what your looking for.

Hello Sharon- Yes, I've looked at the 1881 census and have a print-out of it , also her daughter Charlotte's marriage certificate, a couple of months before she died in 1882, but nothing of her previous marriage in Ireland or her background there. Her first husband's surname is spelt "O'Keeff" on her daughter's marriage cert., so that makes 3 variations of the spelling! Thanks for your interest, Heather.

Do you know if the daughter or and other siblings were born in Ireland or Scotland, if they were born in Scotland they usually had the date of the parents marriage on the birth cert.

Thank you for that info., Sharon. The daughter (Charlotte) was born in Scotland, although it's not clear where, because in the 1871 and 1881 census returns, she is said to have been born in Aberdeen, but two identical entries on the IGI have place of birth as Dundee and Old Machar, Aberdeen. From Scotlandspeople, the reference appears to be Dundee. Her parents were living in Dundee at least from 1871 onwards.
I didn't know the parents date of marriage appears on Scottish birth certs. Could be useful!! Thanks!!
