I have an ancestor who was a member of the Dublin Metropolitan Police in the 1870's. His place of birth is listed as Corneriss, Queens County, year 1840. I have searched everywhere on the net, spoken to a relative in An Post, looked at maps, books, lit a candle to St Jude, nobody has ever heard of this place. If anybody could come to the rescue I would be eternally grateful.
Thanks

Hello,
Unless you have been looking at large scale maps it is unlikely you will find this place. There are two townlands that I am considering, Erris or Carn. If you had mentioned your ancestor's surname I could have checked in Griffiths Valuations against these possibilities. Griffiths Valuation - Laois 1851-52 http://www.failteromhat.com/laois.htm
Best Wishes, Christopher

Hi Jack,
At least we are ready to help. You are in the right locality to do something useful. We have only one problem now. gmack posted in March and seems to have lost interest in this one. There was no reply to my queries on April 17th and June 2nd. gmack was last online Sunday 19th June Do you think we should organise a search party for gmack? It is hard enough looking for ancestors but missing posters is a different matter.
Regards Chris

Hi, Chris,
Yes, I think that one's a dead end (if you'll pardon d pun!!) I check the Laois water line and survey map, but that place is not recorded, so it's spelt wrong, or, somewhere else. I have helped a lot of peole, but more so on Ancestry .com where I have quite a few replies, so much so that I'm trying to set up a Laois Genealogy Society. I will try and get this site moving, it seems to have gone a bit stale. Hope you are keeping well, Regards Jack

How are you Jack?
I wonder if Corneriss should actually be Camross (Mountrath). Bad handwriting in the original document. I was looking for townlands in Co. Laois and came upon this site http://www.gaia.edu/genclass/ireland/laois/laoisrc.htm If gmack does not reappear we may never know
Regards, Chris

Hi, Chris,
Yes, you could be right, but if we had got the name, we could have gone on alone. Different reasons why people have to stop, so we can only suppose we are finished with this topic. Best wishes from a sunny Ireland. Jack
