Kitson/Waldegrave
« on: Sunday 27 March 05 14:51 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
My Gt Gt grandfather was George Frederick Waldegrave Kitson,   born about 1810, he attended the King Edward V1 grammar school, Bury St Edmunds
and in 1822 he "plumped for Eagle?" I don't know what this means, maybe it is a sports team!
There was a Kytson (spelt different) family who owned Hengrave hall about 1600, the Waldegrave name seems to have connections too.
Can anyone throw any light on this?
thanks
Jenny

Welcome joejoe Smiley

According to The Buildings of England, Suffolk by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, Hengrave Hall was  built by Sir Thomas KYTSON, a London Merchant circa 1525 and was completed circa 1538. He states that "Hengrave Hall is one of the most impressive houses of the later years of Henry VIII" There are 2 and half pages dedicated to the hall's architecture.

According to Whites Directory of Suffolk, the  KYTSONS did not hold the Hall for long.  When Sir Thomas Kytson died, he was succeeded by his son Thomas who died in 1602 "when the estate devolved by marriage to Thomas Lord Darcy of Chich, whose second daughter Lady Penelope conveyed Hengrave in marriage to Sir John GAGE of Firle, Sussex."

The Hall was still held by the GAGE family in 1855.
