My Grandfather George Burns. Seaforth Highlanders!

Muter in Scotland.
« on: Thursday 29 September 05 14:47 BST (UK) »

I have found an ancestor called Isabella Muter. I have never come across this name before. Does anyone know anything about its background or has found it in their own family?

There are 348 listings for the name Muter in the BVRs.

Never heard of myself though!

Should have added - only one Isabella

(plenty of variations of Isobel)

This is her:

MUTER, Isabella
Gender:   Female
Birth Date: 13 Jan 1841
Birthplace: Stonehouse, Lanark, Scotland
Recorded in: Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Father:   John MUTER
Mother:   Elisabeth LETHAM
Source:   FHL Film 1066607   Dates:   1758 - 1854

She was the 5th child born out of nine to this couple.

If you want details of the rest of her siblings - let me know.

Hi Ann.
Thanks for replying. The Isabella you mention is probably a relative but the one I am after was born in c. 1794 in Stonehouse Lanarkshire and Married John Burns in 1806 in Stonehouse.  The IGI is very confusing with the dates of birth and marriages but I think I have the right one. They had a son James born in 1812 also in Stonehouse.
             Many thanks   Linda.

Hi Linda,

I had a wee look for the birth of your James and found the following:

MUTER, James
Gender:   Male
Birth Date: 14 Sep 1812
Christening Date: 20 Sep 1812
Recorded in: Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Father:   John MUTER
Mother:   Margaret SUMMERS
Source:   FHL Film 1066607   Dates:   1758 - 1854

He's the only one listed in the BVRs for Stonehouse and he's one of eight children . . . but no Isabella amongst them.

Here's a list of the whole family just for your records - might be cousins!

Jean born 1795, Robert born 1797, John S. born 1799, Thmas born 1801, Marion born 1803, William born 1806, Margaret born 1810, (James born 1812) and Francis Summers born 1815.

Hi again Anne,
I love your tree by the way, and my 7 year old daughter is fascinated by it.
The James I mentioned was James Burns not James Muter. James was the son of John Burns and Isabel/la Muter. I have just had another look and a place called Dalserf is mentioned as well as a possible place of birth for John.
We always thought the family came from the highlands but it seems they were from this part of the world instead. Thats what makes all this so endlessly fascinating.
Best wishes and thanks for looking that up.  Linda.

Fantastic,
That makes it all so much clearer. I guess secretly I was hoping for a link to the great Rabbie Burns himself but I cant find one that ties in with the dates I have and someone has done a massive amount of work on Rabbie and his forbears and descendents so its not hard to check.
Well, I cant say we have ever been a poetic family so I guess thats why.
Thanks so much for your help.  Best wishes Linda.
