Hi all.
I,m looking for any information about James Lynch, b. abt 1816/17. Have recieved info that he came from Fermanagh. He married Ann Rooney. Parents were William Lynch and Elizabeth, ms Lynch. He also had a brother William, b. abt. 1814
They were in Edinburgh from at least 1840 but I have all that info. Interested in any information no matter how little, from Ireland.

Hello Grandma
Wish I could help you, but for the moment, can't think how to start, without knowing, as yet a village, or town, or hamlet name?
I'm still busy trying to trace some of my Lynches from Hull, Yorkshire, England, and have been told they also originated from Ireland, but have yet to find out where from.
Fingers crossed, Grandma, that someone comes up with an idea soon on how to help.
Cheers
Danchaslyn

Hi Danchaslyn.
Thanks for your words of encouragement.. It seems almost impossible to go any further without any tips. The ony thing more I can add to my posting is the fact he was a shoemaker in Edinburgh in 1851, employing 5 men. He came to a sudden death in 1871 after falling down a flight of stairs under the influence!!
Lynchs in Ireland seem to be as common as Smiths in England.
Cheers,
Mary

Hello Grandma
If I were you, I would definitely start a thread on the Midlothian Board, in Scotland, and take it exactly from there, stating he was a shoemaker etc, and all possible info as to when he was in Edinburgh.
I'm sure someone, in Scotland, will post something that will help you further. Wouldn't it be wonderful if he was traced as to when, and how he arrived in Edinburgh, and maybe that record will show, exactly, with any luck, where he, and the others, came from?!
I have a friend in Edinburgh, who loves going to the library and other resource centres and will see if I can contact him, to see if he has any suggestions?!
Cheers

Hi Danchaslyn.
I,ve had a couple of threads on the Midlothian board and it,s there, with the help of Roots chatters, plus my own searching on Scotlands People I have the information I have.
The earliest information I have is the census from 1851, where he is living with his family. His son William was 9 years and born in Edinburgh, so he must have been there before that time, though I could find no record of him on the 1841 census.
I,m hoping that someone on this board will have some idea of what to do and how to go about it.
My paternal grandfather, James Lynch Ferrigan b. 1863 was illigitimate, no father named. Years back my niece was doing some searching and came across the name of James Lynch, shoemaker,in Edinburgh. She thought this was a co-incidence and noted the name. We,ve joked that he could be the missing father.
A few months ago I decided to see what I could find out about James Lynch, but came to a stop with his death and the death of his son William.
After much thought I decided to ask my brother to take a DNA test through A******y.
The results came back with a match within 9 generations, 225 years, with 2 persons, both with the surname Lynch. So we feel almost 100% sure that James Lynch is the missing father.
Of course we musn,t discount the brother of James, William. who also was in Edinburgh in 1851. One or the other of the brother,s could be the guilty party , though I,m leaning to-wards James.
We were quite pleased when are suspicions were verified, but you,re never finished, always wanting to go just one more generation back, and back, and back.
Cheers.
Mary

Hello Grandma
What an absolutely fascinating account! I'm so intrigued by your searches and even your brother's DNA testing.
How amazing a result is that!
Fingers crossed that very, very soon, someone helps with how to find your Lynchs in Ireland??
Cheers

Hello Grandma
My very knowledgeable friend in Edinburgh has the following advice for you:
Cowgate was, as we know, one of the worst living areas in Edinburgh of the late 19th Century.
It was known as "Little Ireland".
The suggestion is, that you contact the Roman Catholic church on the Cowgate, where many of the Irish immigrants records were stored.
Good luck!
Cheers

Hi Danchaslyn.
Thanks for your kind offer. I havn,t had time to getting a mail off, but will try to-morrow.
We,ve decided to upgrade out DNA test to a 46 marker. Will take a couple of weeks before the results are ready.
Have been in contact with one of the Lynchs that we matched within 9 generations, 225 years. They also have used the 46 marker test and were only 4 generations from the other match. So if we,re lucky it could be the same with us and then the search narrows. Somewhere in Ireland lies the answer.
I,ve tried to find the marriage of James Lynch and Ann Rooney in Edinburgh., with no result.
Does anybody out there know how I should go about searching in Fermanagh when I don,t even know the name of the parish?
Mary

Hello Grandma
That is great news about your DNA matches........(and the other person)'s, what an exciting result you soon will have!
As you can't find a marriage record for James Lynch and Anne Rooney in Edinburgh, does this perhaps mean that they never married?
Would you perhaps need to gather together a list of all the parishes in Fermanagh and start a search of each?
I've done a few for elsewhere in Ireland and was amused to find Irish people listed and then, as an anecdote, 'English and Others' are listed!
Cheers
Danchaslyn
