REED family from North Devon
« on: Friday 25 March 05 11:51 UTC (UK) »

First, please please can this section be named Devon NOT
Devonshire!

I'm looking for family tree links in the north Devon area
for the surnames Reed, Gear, Dart, Driver.

Anyone interested?

Hi Richard.
I agree that this board should be renamed to Devon, as nobody calls this county Devonshire Roll Eyes You may wish to direct your concerns to the board moderator.

I have a Matilda & Mary Ann Dart in my tree born in Bow near Crediton, daughters of John Dart & his wife Maryanne (nee Baker). Matilda was born 1847 & married Joseph Matthews. Mary Ann was born 1852 & married Joseph's brother Henry Matthews.

Hi Ryan

The first time Dart enters our tree was when...

William Reed b 1798 in Ilfracombe.
named his son...
William Dart Reed b. 1831 in Braughton.

So far not found as a maiden name.

Happy Hunting.

Hi Guys  Grin

The board catagories are based on the Counties as they were in 1851 to 1891, this is the reason we use Devonshire rather than Devon.

Hi Sarah,
So there is a method behind your madness (no offense intended - simply a figure of speach Wink)!! That's good to know.

Hi Sarah,

Can you let me know when the pre-1851 forum starts?
Sorry, yes I know, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. Grin

I liked the pic of you busy at your PC, but it looks like your
coffee mug needs a re-fill!

My only real concern is if people keep using 'Devonshire'
they may think it's still called that, sorry (again!) but we could start a whole new forum on this, for example I was born'n'bred in the country but my girlfriend doesn't call me her 'swain'.?Grin

Ok, big hugs'n'kisses, who cares about being PC!

Thanks Rich.

Sorry Guys I am just bringing us inline with the publications of the day.

We have to "anchor" the site on a set period of time which we can then add and exchange information on.

Richard I am glad you observed how I need a refill, Trystan   hasn't spotted the problem either........

Where are you Rich ?? bit confused about "swain"  Huh Huh

Hi,

I'm now living in the North Island of New Zealand, came here
3 years ago from the UK.

Now missing real winters & real pubs  Wink

From the Concise English Dictionary:-

Swain, A young rustic; a country gallant; a male lover.  Grin

Thanks for the explanation, I shall have to remember that one !

It can't get any better than a good pint, in an English Pub with a log fire after a long walk in the snow.

We had snow here last night ! How about that for April  Shocked

O.K.  I am new to this.... and this maybe a goosechase...but here goes....

My Great, Great, Great grandfather was William Bateman Reed.....  he had a son named Ralph Newbury Reed, who had a daughter named Blanche Jessica Reed....who eventually leads to me several more generations later...  I know he had married a Mary Dodgeson....or Mary Dodgeson was his mother....not sure there....  I heard he was a builder/Architect in Bristol and that he was given the key to the city for something.... I don't know if he actually lived in Bristol, or that was just where the hotels were located that he built.

that's really all I know....can anyone fill in any blanks?  And anyone relatives now?Huh/
