Baptism Records
« on: Friday 25 March 05 21:27 GMT (UK) »

I have hit 'my' brickwall with my GGGrandfather William BURTON. I have his marriage cert 1853, but alas no Fathers name on it. On various census's he was born c 1834, Madley, Shropshire. I have managed to find him in 1851, but only as a lodger. I would dearly love to find at least his Mother's name. Can anyone direct me to where I could look next? Where can I find his baptism record?
Many thanks

The Shropshire Archives hold the parish registers for Madeley.  Births for 1813 - 1915 are available on microfilm nos: 89 - 16.

I see from your profile that you are in Ireland.  I suggest you post a look up request on here, or alternatively you can put in a request directly to the Archives.  They will do one quick search (about 10 minutes) per person for free, otherwise it's up to £18 per hour.

Hi Sue

Another alternative would be the Shropshire Family History Society.  Check out their publications list.

Hi Sue

When I have emailed the Archives in the past, I have always had an extremely quick response, containing everything I asked for plus more.  I'm sure some of my queries took more than 10 minutes, and I've never been charged a penny.

On one occasion I phoned up instead, and was chatting to a very nice lady for at least 20 minutes - again, for free.

Hi Jan

Have received today from the Shropshire Archives the baptism of
William Burton, Parents names: Benjamin & Julia.

Not convinced its the one I'm looking for, wasn't expecting a Father
to be mentioned.    Undecided

The address given was LLoyds. Does this sound familier to you?

The Lloyds was a place between Madeley, Ironbridge and Coalport. Hope this helps.

Best wishes

Hi Sue

Sorry I haven't replied sooner, but didn't get an email notification Huh

You say you found William in 1851 as a lodger, have you now found Benjamin and Julia?

Have you managed to convince yourself that you have the correct baptism record?

Hi Jan,
To date I have not managed to find any info on Benjamin & Julia    Huh
Benjamin was a Locksmith by trade.

The earliest reference of William Burton was aged 18 lodging
in Wolstanton, Staffordshire on the 1851 census.
I am certain this is my William as he shares the household with
other lodgers which turn out to be his future brother-in-laws.

Shropshire Archives confirmed that this baptism was the only William Burton
born between 1829-1833 in the Madeley area.

I am yet to prove or disprove this is the correct William.    Undecided

A difficult one Sue!!

On the baptism record of William does it say that Benjamin and Julia are also Burton.  The reason I ask is on his marriage certificate there is no father's name so I am assuming that he was illegitimate Huh  I have found in such cases of illegitimacy the child was often given the mother's surname, not the known father's surname.

It might be worth asking the Archives to look again, but this time further than 1833.  It is possible that William's age in the census was incorrect.  I have come across many of my ancestors whose ages in the census didn't match with their birth certificates!!!  Just a thought.

On a final note, who are the witnesses on the marriage certificate.  Sometimes they were relatives, which may give you a couple more clues.
