William Raeburn
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 19:57 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone
I'm trying to get information about william raeburn who is listed in the 1851 census in Marnoch (age31). His wife is Jessie (Barron) and children Jane, John, Margaret, Barbara and Jessie. His wife died in 1857 and I can't find William after that. I am trying to trace william's parents. William is my gr. gr. grandfather. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jill

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

There are a couple of trees on Ancestry for this family. Both show William's parents as John Raeburn and Margaret Davidson. There is also an entry for a possible second marriage in 1860 to a Mary Davidson in 1860 - this can be verified on SP to let you confirm that it is the right William, it shows on IGI on 09 FEB 1860 in Banff, Banff. The marriage cert, if correct, will also let you confirm his parents' names.

William and Jessie look to have had a couple of children after the 1851 census. A son William was born on 30 JUL 1855 in Banff. The first year of official registration in Scotland and the BMD entries on the registers ran over two pages of the register and included a wealth of additional info. For birth certs, it should include the date and place of parents' marriage, where parents were born and how many children they had (alive/deceased, girls/boys). A useful certificate to look at for background  Smiley It is this William b. 1855 whose line down has been followed through to descendents on one of the trees.

There is at least one son looking to have been born to William and potential second wife following their 1860 marriage:

JAMES FORBES BISSET RAEBURN Birth: 11 NOV 1860 Banff, Banff

I wonder if this could be the family in 1861. This is a totally messy transcription I am looking at on Ancestry - you will have to look at the original to make sense of it:

Mary Raeburn 21 - (ps The Husband Is Dick & Lying In The Inverness)  Lips Sealed as transcribed, b. Banff, MacDuff
Grace Raeburn 7 b. Banff, MacDuff
William Raeburn 5 b. Banff, MacDuff
James Raeburn 55 Months (likely 5 months  Roll Eyes) b.

Address: No 25 Huntly Street, Inverness

Grace is the other child showing on the Ancestry trees as born to William and Jessie (Barron).

There is also this entry in 1871, and again I think you will need to check original as William Snr's age looks wrong:

William Raeburn 60, labourer, b. MacDuff, Banff
Mary Raeburn 29 b. MacDuff, Banff
James Raeburn 10 b. Inverness
Elizabeth Raeburn 8 b. Inverness

Address: 7 Market Brae, Inverness

And in 1881:

William Raeburn 55, labourer b. Banff, Banffshire
Betsy Raeburn 17 b. Inverss, Inverss Shire

Address: 17 Factory St, Inverness

Hi Monica
You mention "Ancestry" as your source. Is this "Ancestry.com"?
Do you think that it is worth subscribing to?

Hi Jill

Depends what research you are looking to do. If your research is only in Scotland, then Ancestry only provide a transcript of the Scottish censuses. The original images for Scottish censuses are only available through Scotlands People. If your research covers England/Wales as well, there is a larger number of records you can access, including original images of the census there.

A subscription also allows you to view full details and contact other members regarding their submitted family trees.

There are a number of ways of accessing Ancestry: annual/monthly membership and also a free 14 day trial for example and different levels of membership.

Have a look at their site to see if this is what you need for your research  Smiley
