Hi, I am new to this web site, and am looking for help.
I am looking for information about Thomas Lockyer born c1867 Eridge, Married 14/11/1896 to Nellie Jane White. Occupation blacksmith.
I am unable to find Thomas Lockyer on 1871, 1881, or 1891 census.
Fathers name blank and occupation blank on 1896 marriage certificate.
Was told by my late grandmother 20 years ago that his parents names were William Lockyer and Jane Stiles/Styles. Am unable to find these names with Thomas also.
Any help much appreciated, too far away to visit Sussex myself.
Thanks

Hi,
His age on the marriage certificate is 30. The date was 14/11/1896. The witnessses names are John Charlie Lewis Whiting and Ada Cornwall. I know that Ada Cornwall is Nellie Whites' cousin, and that she was living with the Cornwalls' at the time of the 1881 census. I have no connection with Whiting, hadn't thought of looking up this name! I said that I needed help!
The address for Thomas on the certificate is The Steep, Jarvis Brook.
Nellie's address is Hadlow Down, although she was born in Brighton.
The Marriage took place at The Parish Church in the Parish of Rotherfield.
I know that my Great Grandfather was probably always a blacksmith, as he had his own forge whilst my grandmother grew up and she was born 1910. All nine of Thomas' children were born 1898 onwards and registered at Uckfield, and he spent the rest of his life in Sussex. Dont understand why he isn't appearing there earlier.
Thanks Alex

Hi, I also have these Lockyers from the 1851 census saved in the hope that given that they are blacksmiths that they are related. Also Thomas named one of his daughters Philedelphia.
But I am missing the step inbetween. I don't have a birth date only year, so am unsure about obtaining a birth certificate for him to confirm his parents names.
Thanks for the tip about different spellings of Lockyer I will give that a try.
Thanks Alex

I don't think that these William's can be right for Thomas' father, one is too young and the other too old. But the William 22 in 1851 at renley farm would have been 38 when Thomas was born so is a good lead.
I will check the 1837 website, I have never used it before, but I am not sure if the names William and Jane are red herrings or not. My gran was already old when she passed the info to me.
Have tried other spellings of Lockyer to no avail so far. Thanks Alex

Thanks for the 1837 online info. I have found Thomas Lockyer's birth 1866, Uckfield, and ordered a birth certificate from the family Resource centre, so should have some answers in a couple of weeks.
In the meantime, I've been on the Sussex Weald for the 1851, have not tried the 1881. Am also trying Sockyer!
Thanks again Alex
