ELPHICK, Madeline Lily
« on: Thursday 20 May 04 18:30 UTC (UK) »

I note on the marriage certificate it is listed as Lily Madeline.

Chris would you be so kind as to see if there are any Lily Elphick/Green in the 1901 census?

Much appreciated

Hi

On the 1901 census on line there were 3 Lily Elphicks aged 3, 10 and 15.

This one looked the best - but wrong father

Interesting Chris!!

Especially the fact that Frederick and Louisa "Edith"  Elphick were witnesses at my "Lily's" wedding (on her marriage certificate)

On February 14, 1920 she was 29 years of age so that would be pretty much dead on.  However, it is the parents' names that totally confuses me.

What would you suggest I do next ?  I am somewhat new to this game

Your assistance, once again, would be greatly appreciated.

Hi heywyre

Its got me just as much confused as you.

Not sure what to suggest as yet, it all seemed so straight forward to begin with.

I reckon we have to try and find that Birth of Lily /Madeline to verify who her father was/is - but dont give up on that entry above, keep it in the back of your mind.

Will go back to the 1891 to see if I can find a very young Lily / Madeline

Hi

1891 census came up with the following two entries

Database: 1891 England Census
May 20, 2004
10:14 PM
~~~~~~~~
Name Age in 1891 Birthplace Relationship to head-of-house Civil parish County
Elphick, Lily 7.12 Grimsby, Lincolnshire Daughter  Clee with Weelsby  Lincolnshire
Elphick, Lily 7 Hastings, Sussex Daughter  Ore  Sussex
Whilst Madeline Elphick produced just one family - but parents are wrong
Elphick, Ethel, 3 Peckham Daughter Camberwell London
Elphick, Fred 24 Udimore, Sussex Head Camberwell London
Elphick, Madeline 4months Peckham Daughter Camberwell London
Elphick, Olive 23 Sunbridge, Kent Wife Camberwell London
Makes life more confusing don't it
She would definitely have been about that age - perhaps Fred remarried?
Gawd - how confusing
Don't know if this helps but there is an entry in FBMD for a marriage of Frederick Victor J Elphick, Brighton, 2b,488,Sept qtr 1895 and there is a Louisa Edith Coussens on the same page.
Also there is a death for Olive Hearn Elphick,Wandsworth,1d,603,Mar qtr 1895
So that all seems to fit except, didn't you say her father was Henry?
Wow - now that would make total sense - even though it is the wrong father.  But, maybe, for whatever reason, Fred was really her uncle and Henry and his wife died ?
This is all too weird
In the 1891 and 1901 census the Fred seems to be the same guy
However, what happened to Olive and Ethel - the death in 1895 that I found was an Oliver (age-0) so there is a possibility Olive died during childbirth
But what became of Ethel - I couldn't find a death for her (at least not in the information I had)
And, there was an extra Fred in the picture - which could have been through the new marriage
Quite right - full apologies from me, I miss read the Oliver entry. I'm on some nasty tablets right now and my concentration is less than 100%. I will retire. Good luck puzzling it all out!
