Castle Gates, St. Mary's
« on: Tuesday 29 March 05 15:10 UTC (UK) »

The 1871 census of my ancestors Charles & Sarah Ann Williams shows then living at Number 64 Castle Gates, "Eating House", St Mary's Civil Parish, Castle Without (sp?)Municipal Ward, Shrewsbury.

I'm tring to understand this place "Castle Gates".  Many families lived there, does it still exist and what is the "Eating House" and does that still exist today?

Thanks

Castle Gates still exists but consists mainly of businesses, rather than private dwellings - an Estate Agent, Norman R Lloyd, Brady's Irish Bar, The Lucroft Hotel, Vincent's Taxi's, DJB Hairdressers to name but a few!

I live in Shrewsbury, and would have gladly taken some photos for you but unfortunately the digi camera was broken by one of the kids over Christmas.......can't afford another one yet!!

I'm not sure what is now at number 64, or indeed if it still exists.  A lot of the properties just have names not numbers.

I would suggest that you contact the Shropshire Archives.  They are very helpful, and in fact helped another Rootschatter recently with an old map of Castle Foregate.  I believe they charge about £3.50 for a copy of a map.

Here's the link to the site:   http://www.shropshireonline.gov.uk/archives.nsf

If you email them, they usually reply very quickly.

Good Luck!

Hi there,

I have been into Shrewsbury today and walked up Castle Gates!!!! When I was walking up there I found myself thinking of your request........... Grin

Castle Gates appears to only go to No 24, which is the Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council offices - opposite the Shrewsbury Library which was originally Shrewsbury School.  After this building, Castle Gates then merges into Castle Street, the first building being Hatcher Rogerson Solicitiors, but their address is No 25 Castle Street Huh Huh

Maybe the Shropshire Archives will be able to tell you more - perhaps in the 1871 census the numbering system was different.

Good Luck.
