William Harnett Birthplace?
« on: Tuesday 29 March 05 21:26 UTC (UK) »

My Gt. Grandfather William Harnett, a mariner, married(as a widower) in 1858 to Susannah Scouler(spinster) in Deptford, no address and no age given, father was also William, mariner. On subsequent children's birth certs William is given as  In-Pensioner, Greenwich Hospital. I am fairly certain he is an in-pensioner, Greenwich Hospital, in 1861, but census on-line has many blanks and is not easy to read. On his death cert. 1870, he was Out-Pensioner living with his wife in Greenwich. I am very keen to find his place of birth so as to progress further with my tree. I have searched all the usual sources. Can anyone suggest a way forward please,
regards, Mike Harnett.

Hi Mike

You could try RN pensions at the National Archives, Kew, London if you haven't done so already:

http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=41

If you have not had an offer of a look up in a week or so, then you could post again requesting a lookup in the 1861 census to see if anybody else has a resource that is more legible.

Best wishes

Hi

I have Harnett in my family but from East Kent.

I had a look on www.1837online.com and (I think) may have found the wife on the 1861 census as Susanna Harnet (sic) at 2 Caradoc Street, Greenwich. She is living by herself: married / aged 38 (I think) / pensioner's wife / born Poplar, Middlesex. Is this her?

If it is her, obviously William is elsewhere: as a mariner, he might simply have been at sea on census night.

Thanks for the input to my William Harnett query. Yes it is my Susanna Harnet at Caradoc street, 1861. As she is described as pensioners wife I believe that he is already in Greenwich Hospital. A William Harnett pension record states that his service ended 14th August 1861 but I can not tell if this is MY William, there are several. The pension record gives only age 21 on 16th Feb 1828 but no birthplace.
The 1828 date ties in with the death age i.e. birth c1807-9
This is why I believe that my only chance is the 1861 census for Greenwich Hospital for his birth place. Best wishes, Mike Harnett.
