1841 census POPE - hopefully Hertford

Hi,

I asked about my Pope ancestors some time ago.....thinking that they were from Welwyn as the IGI had some christenings there, but Rick kindly checked the 1841 for me and there was no sign of them there.

I'm now wondering if they might possibly have actually come from Hertford as my g g g grandfather Ephraim put down in later censuses his birth place as Hertford. And today I found a possible brother Henry for him in 1871 who also has his birth place as Hertford.

The family I am particularly interested in is:

Ephraim Pope b. 1825 in Hertford chr. in Welwyn
Thomas Pope (father of Ephraim) b.? in ?
Ann Pope (wife of Thomas)b,? in ?

Other possible children of Thomas and Ann are:
Mary Pope chr 1818
Henry Pope chr 1817
Charles Terry Chr. 1815
Sarah Pope Chr. 1814
but they might be too old in 1841 to be living at home?

If anyone had a name index to Hertford 1841 (if one exists) or else happens to come across any of the above in Hertford at some point (it's probably a bit too large a place for me to ask that someone look through the whole town? I've never visited there so I've no idea of the size of the town) I'd be very greatful

I'm partic. interested to find out if his parents are from hertfordshire or not.

Bedfordshire boy kindly found Ephraim for me in later censuses by which time he'd moved away (don't want anyone to waste their time looking for him in Herts 1851) I don't know if his parents would still be alive then.

Hi Emily

As far as I know, all of the town of Hertford has been indexed for 1841, but the index is only available for viewing at HALS I'm afraid.

To look through all of Hertford would be a long job I'm afraid, but if you could get the reference from HALS (It would probably cost less than £5 for this, and as this would be a very quick request, they may well not charge at all) I will gladly check the reference out for you.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for your advice about the 1841 index, I didn't know before about the research service at HALS. I'll have to look into applying for them to have a look in the index for my Popes.
I'll get back to you on your offer to look up the ref. if I have any luck with them being there.
