Hi Pony

There are several COOMBES (and variants) including a G H in the 1917/1918 Canterbury district directory http://www.historicaldirectories.org

If you've not used this site before, select "keyword" and the "Kent" "1910s" and enter COOMBES in the keyword box - continue to select next hit once you have the directory pages up.

Canterbury library hold directories/electoral registers:

Hi Pony

The best way to do a 1901 census search is an ordinary name search as everybody comes up in that regardless of where they were.  However, it's worth bearing in mind that if he was in the army at the time of the 1901 census then some soldiers may have been away fighting in the Boer War.

Do you have enough info ie. birth date/place/parent's or sibling's names to identify which of the many hundred of George COOM....  in the 1901 census is yours?

If not, then I would try and obtain his marriage certificate to get some further info ie. age, father's name & occupation etc. which might help narrow things down a bit.

You'll get lots of help & advice on here if you get stuck!

Best wishes
