Land mentioned in a will
« on: Wednesday 30 March 05 16:29 UTC (UK) »

Hello,
I am trying to find out  something about some land left to an ancestor. It mentions pasture and meadow land in the Parish of Scarhlade? in the county of Gloucester called Wigmore. Does this make sense to anyone. My reference is for 1837 so it must be some time before that.
Thanks

Hello, Have looked for a parish of the name you queried in Gloucestershire and there is no such place - Could it be Lechlade??? and would it be worth you contacting the Gloucester Record Office - they have a web site

Hello,
I'm desperately trying to work out how to copy the relevant part of the will onto an e mail but failing! I'm sure it starts Sca... and ends in ...lade though. There may be some confusion over county as I have seen Oxfordshire mentioned in the census though this will definately says Gloucester.
I have relatives in Gloucester and they may be able to shed light on it or visit the record office for me. Thanks anyway

Hi Flis,

not sure if you meant "I'm desperately trying to work out how to copy the relevant part of the will onto " Rootschat so you can try and help me decipher it.

If you did, try this link for tips, and if that doesn't work, ask us again.

Well done !

For your next attempt, try resizing it a bit (instructions also on that thread), so it doesn't run over to the right, and then you can include more text (for comparisons)

I agree that it looks like Scarhlade but could that be 'v' at the end ?? Scarchlave ??

Any Gloucester experts out there ??

I think Mary may be right.  Lechlade was rendered LEACHLADE in the past and the second letter could well be an E (compare with known examples).

Having said that, the initial letter looks very much like and S.  Would whoever drew up the document have been familiar with the names, I wonder?  If they were at a distance, they may have mistranscribed them!!  Huh

There are various publications on the place names of Gloucestershire and field names.  I imagine the GRO would be the place to find them.

kind regards

Thanks to both of you for that. I'll see what I can find out from Gloucester. If I can ever find out the lady's maiden name perhaps all would become clear from a different direction. I can't really convince myself it is Lechlade but in the absense of anything else will see if it leads to anything.
Thanks again

The majority of references to Wigmore on the net are to a place near Leintwardine, Herefordshire.

Alternatively there is a Wingmoor Farm at Stoke Orchard, north of Cheltenham (and I daresay others elsewhere).

Huh Huh

Thank you all very much for this.  Every one I show it to seems to be coming down for Lechlade so I guess I'm outnumbered and will move forward on the assumption that that is what it says. I'll try the Lechlade site too, it looks as if it could be very useful.
Best wishes
