Shoe and boot makers, Honiton, Devon c1914.
Does anyone have any info on any?
My grandfather left school and worked as apprentice shoe/bootmaker before joining the Army

Hello Nicola,

I've managed to find something about the leather industry at Crediton but so far have found nothing about Honiton. There was a flourishing woollen industry in Crediton which started to decline at the end of the eighteenth century due to competition from other places. This meant that a different occupation had to be established and a number of people turned to the leather industry. I suppose that made sense ... there's a breed of cattle named after the county so obviously the raw material was handy to enable the growth of the leather industry including the manufacture of boots and shoes. Some of it was a cottage industry but the majority seems to have been in factories of various sizes. www.devonguide.com/Crediton

You may have to look at trade directories to find which boot and shoe businesses were in Honiton and then try to find out if there are records for those businesses in an archive somewhere.

It might be worth looking for any apprenticeship records.  I don't now whether Honiton had an active Guildhall at that time but I would suggest that you start with Devon Record office.
