Hi My GG Grandparents were Sarah Morgan and John Birchall. They had 3 children Hannah and James who were born in Derby and Peter who was born in 1860 at Shelton Stoke on Trent. On the 1871 Census John had died and Sarah Morgan had remarried a Joseph Ruscoe or Roscoe and was living at Shelton Staffs. Hannah is age 16, James is aged 15 and Peter is age 10. Because I had such limited information until I joined Roots Chat I thought that both of Peters parents were from Staffordshire, on the 1871 census Sarah aged 40 gives her birthplace as Onlea Salop. Does anyone know if there is a place called Onlea? I have done many searches on 1837 online looking for John Birchall and Sarah Morgan's marriage date, but I had probably wrongly assumed that they were both from Staffordshire. I would really appreciate any information or help anyone could give me. Kind regards and Best Wishes.

Hi rhial
Do you have the original 1871 census image showing Sarah's birthplace as Onlea Salop. If so, could you post the relevant bit on here for us to have a look at?
I have never heard of Onlea, and was just wondering whether another pair of eyes may read the entry differently!!!

Hi Pam
Curiosity has got the better of me!!!!!!!!
Onlea, Salop -
"Salop, Abbreviation and former official name (1972–80) of Shropshire, a county in England."
Do you have the reference for that 1871 look up. It will begin with RG?? then there should be a piece number, folio and page number.

Hi Rhial
I have just had a look at this and it does look exactly like Onlea.
I cannot think of anything here in Shropshire that is close to this. Onibury at a guess.
The only other place that springs to mind with there being a Staffs connection is Onnerley Staffs. It could have been classed as Shropshire once as its on the border
