My Stephen Ambrose claims to have been baptised in Hungerford parish in 1786. Is there anyone who can help with this? Is Hungerford only one parish or could there be several in the town?
There is only one parish of Hungerford in Berkshire - it is not a large place even now, its registers are supposed to be in the IGI - but as you probably know there is no sign of your Stephen - where did you get info about his birth from? any other clues?

Thanks Debbie, for your reply. My information about Stephen Ambrose comes from his Settlement Examination, where he says he was born in the Parish of Hungeford. His age comes from his Marriage Bond in 1811, where he says he is 22 years old. I think I mistyped his birth year as 1786 - should be 1789, but as you say, he is not in the IGI in any case.
I think I will have to extend my searches to neighbouring parishes as presumably they are not all on the IGI.
Don, Not sure if it helps with your Ambroses but these are the ones we have in a partial Berkshire wills index. Might just give a clue to your origins: Ambrose Ambrose, Frances [Leverton] (w/o William) 1705 cousin Ann Wheeler (w&i) ADB Ambrose, Henry [Leverton] 1705 cousin Ann Wheeler (w&i) ADB Ambrose, John [Leverton] 1705 cousin Ann Wheeler (w&i) ADB Ambrose, John Uplambourn gent. 1730 executor John Hamblen (w&c) PCC Ambrose, John Uplambourn gent. 1739 trustee William Forty PCC Ambrose, Thomas Haywood Farm, Leverton 1705 executor loving kinsman Ann Wheeler (w&i) ADB Ambrose, William [Leverton] 1705 nephew Ann Wheeler (w&i) ADB Ambrose, William [Leverton] (h/o Frances) 1705 cousin's husb Ann Wheeler (w&i) ADB
