The JACOBS of Dorset.
« on: Monday 24 May 04 20:55 BST (UK) »

I have traced my family tree back to the early 1800's and find they mainly came from  Cranborne, Edmonsham and Hampreston all in the county of Dorset. Has anyone any info of the name JACOBS in that area between 1750 and 1850.The Cranborne marriage register shows the marriage of Joseph and Elizabeth Jacobs in 1820 and the marriage ofRichard and Betty Jacobs in 1769 but I am unable to relate the two events. HELP.

Hi Dudjac,

Could you give us more information on the people and dates that you are trying to link to? There are lots of Jacobs in Dorset, further information may well bring better results.

Kind Regards, Frances

Hi Frances.
Harry Jacobs b.1853 in Hampreston, Dorset was the son of Henry Jacobs b.1823 in Cranborne, Dorset.( or at least so the 1861 census for Hampreston tells me.)
In the parish records for Cranborne , Henrys birth is duly shown and back in 1820 a Joseph Jacobs married an Elizabeth Still who I believe to be Henrys parents.
Further back in the Cranborne records I find that in 1769 a Richard Jacobs married a Betty Letty. Could this possibly be Josephs parents. All these names and dates are driving me nuts. How can I confirm these details?

Hi Dudac,
I do not know if you already have these. Where there any more children given on the 1861 census? I could look for them if you wished. Did the 1851 census give any clues to this family?

Thanks for the info.  Information shown on the 1861 census is Henry.... head,   Emily....wife,   Emma.....daug,  Harry....son,
Ann E....daug, George....son, and Selina.....daug.
In the information you have provided there are two results for Joseph/Edward.
1. Joseph b.1770. Father Edward.
2  Joseph b.1797. Father Edward. (This date fits in rather well with other details I have)
Could this be the same Edward. Unlikely he would christen two sons with the same name. Or pure coincidence?

Have you any further info on Edward and Mary.

Another problem I have encountered is with Henry and wife Emily. The government records show that marriages for a Henry Jacobs's between 1840 and 1850 show that none of them were married to an Emily. (one entry in 1846 and one in 1850)

databases and has included more for Dorset. May be worth a look?

Hi Dudjac,

No luck with Edwards birth, the only Edward is the one below but
too way out on dates I would think. I could not find any Edward Jacobs married in Dorset. The only Edward and Mary marriages I can see are in Hampshire in 1787 and 1802.

In case you need them later, there are some Jacobs further back from various areas. Regards, Frances

Hi Frances.

The details you sent regarding Edward Jacob christening in1738 at Edmonsham ties in rather well although at first glance it did seem too way out.
Are you able to find out who he married , probably in Edmonsham round about 1760?

Many Thanks

 Hi.

I've come to a complete standstill with my family tree.  Have you any sugestions??

The following has me tearing my hair out.

Henery JACOB ( Possibly from Edmonsham and born about 1718. Married to Ann.)

Edward JACOB.(Son of Henery.b.1738. Edmonsham.)

Joseph JACOB.(Son of Edward.b.1770.)

Joseph JACOB.(Son of Joseph.born about 1797. Married Elizabeth Still in 1820.) Confirmed in Cranborne Parish Records.)

Henry JACOBs.(Son of Joseph and Elizabeth. b.1823. Cranborne records confirm.)

I have obtain both Cranborne and Edmonsham Parish records but Henery, Edward and Joseph do not appear. I have no confirmation that they were related,  however the dates and locations do tie in.   What now.

Regards dudjac.
