Hiya Garry,

I have access to all the Dumfrieshire census films - they aren't all indexed as I'm sure you know or life would be great.  I'm actually off on holiday tonight but when I get back next week I'll look these up unless someone else has beaten me to it.

I thought I'd reply rather than ignore your post!

On a secondary question do you have any connection to Mary Edgar from Annan, she was the second wife of my direct Michael Fallon.  She was originally married to a John Swan.  Michael & Mary lived on Port St, Annan in 1901.  She was born ~ 1847 and died 27/03/1923.  Her parents were Jane Beattie and Adam Edgar who I think also lived on Port St.

Cheers,
Pam

Hi Pam

I saw Adam and Jane Edgar in the 1851 census.  Adam is listed as born Dornock, so I assumed he was unrelated.

I also saw a William Edgar of Ewart's ST in 1851 census, whi I assume is the brother of Thomas, based on age and plkace of birth being the same

Sorry this has taken so long, and it is only half done (no index and football on!)  Sorry for the lack of folio numbers I was seriously running out of time.

thanks pam

I think the 1841 margaret and thomas are interesting but prob not connected as margaret is too young. unless census taker error.  The 1861 Port st entry definately not connected I feel.

The 1861 entry was great !!! It is my people as they obviously lived there for some time.  David Edgar 8 y/o son in the family is a new person.  I would be stoked if you can find them all in 1871.

I've found that one of my directs has wildly different ages a variation of 15 years at one point between the different census in Annan.  I think other people have found the same problem.  1841 in particular seems to have severe rounding down!

Are you aware of the 1801/11/21 census for Annan?  Gilchrist (him of the MI) transcribed it and it is published.  I've seen a copy and it tied in fab for my Caruthers though others argue that it is useless.  1801 is good but the data deteriorates after that - I know it is available from the LDS.  I'll try and order it from the Scottish Ref library and I'll look up Edgar - I wouldn't mind seeing it again myself.  I'll do 1871 when there is a break in the football ;-)

So my to do list is:
1871
Order early census
How about MI?  Annan old and slightly less old churchyards are transcribed and indexed.

HiPam

Whats is "the MI"?

Also, the 1841 census with Thomas and Margaret, what does the Y stand for ? Was there a marital status recorded back then ?

Sorry Garry - I'm all jargoned up nowadays!

MI is Memorial Inscriptions.  In Dumfrieshire George Gilchrist transcribed most of the pre-1855 gravestones in most of the parishes - Annan included.  In the "Library and FHS Lookups" forum I've posted a Look up and there is a link of all the MI available in Edinburgh.

In 1841 the last column was for ...

"Where born; whether born in same county (Y or N), whether born in Scotland (S), Ireland (I), or foreign parts (F)"

This page gives a lot of detail:-
http://www.gendocs.demon.co.uk/census.html

So the Y is that they were born in Dumfrieshire.

Cheers,
Pam
