If you have ancestors who emigrated here then they may have all sorts of funny characters in their names. The most common is probably the Umlaut (pronounced um-lout) from German names i.e ä, ö, ü
How can you put these names on your web site when the characters aren't on the keyboard ?? These examples are for german letters, but other "foreign" letters are also available.
1) Use alternative spellings (if available !):
ä and Ä : A-Umlaut Alternative: ae or Ae ö and Ö : O-Umlaut Alternative: oe or Oe ü and Ü : U-Umlaut Alternative: ue or Ue ß : Scharfes S Alternative: ss
2) Use the Unicode references or HTML special characters:
Symbol Reference Description Alternative (unicode) (HTML name)
ä ä Small a, dieresis or umlaut mark ä Ä Ä Capital A, dieresis or umlaut mark Ä
ö ö Small o, dieresis or umlaut mark ö Ö Ö Capital O, dieresis or umlaut mark Ö
ü ü Small u, dieresis or umlaut mark ü Ü Ü Capital U, dieresis or umlaut mark Ü
ß ß Small sharp s, German (sz ligature) ß
3) Drag & Drop from the Charaacter table: I am using a german version of windows, so I am guessing at some of the commands and descriptions, but, here goes ...
Find the Character table on my computer (windows 2000) - programs - acessories - system programs - character table
click on any "funny" character drag it into your text
and that's it !
for instance: Keyboard: Ä , drag and drop from Character table: Ä
(For Absolute Beginners: Drag & Drop = click on it with left mouse button and, holding the mouse button down, drag it to it's destination, and then let go of mouse button ! )
4) Use the ALT-Key (this is a tip from jbidaho): "My 'tip' for the umlauts, is that I used the character map, and looked at the shortcut - so pressing ALT and typing 0252 (only from the numeric keypad) gave me a 'ü'."
