Hi: I'm looking for information on a Hodges family that lived in the Littledean area at the time of the 1881 census.
My great-great-grandfather was William Henry Hodges who was born in Minsterworth but worked as a manager of an iron works in Littledean (married to Sarah Drew, 7 children, 2 died in infancy and the remaining 5 were shipped to America in 1886 after both parents died to live with maternal Drew relatives in Westfield, MA).
William had a brother, Henry Jabez Hodges, who also lived in Littledean at the same time and was also a manager of an iron works at one point (though the census lists him as unemployed). Henry also married a Drew (Jane, the sister of Sarah) and had four children at the time of the 1881 census. Both brothers are listed on the 1876 Morris & Co. Gazetteer for 1876 for Littledean.
Supposedly, there was also a sister, Esther <sp?> who I know absolutely nothing about.
There's a strong connection to Cinderford with the family, since that's where both Drew sisters are from and I have a wonderful piece of formal calligraphy done by William Henry that's dated 1846 at the Cinderford School.
I'm trying to backtrack these Hodges. William and Henry's parents are, according to one family member, Henry Hodges and Bridgett Davis. There is a Henry and Bridges Hodges in Littledean in the 1871 census (he's listed as a shopkeeper originally from Tewkesbury, born around 1800) and she is from Lingen, Herefordshire about the same age.
That's all I know about them and there seems to be a lot of Hodges roaming Tewkesbury mid-1800s so I'm really hoping to find someone who's look into the family a bit.
Hope this posting isn't too general (most of the others I've read seem much more focused, but I'm kind of grasping at straws since I don't have a lot of information). Here in America, other than the 1881/1891 census on ancestry.com, there's not too much to delve into on Gloucestershire roots.
Many thanks.

Hi!
I came across the following entries in the International Genealogical Index and while the information is not always totally accurate I thought that I would mention it in the hope that it proves useful, if only as a starting point.
Henry Hodges married Bridget Davies on 12th April 1832 at Holmer, Herefordshire.
Their children are as follows:
Mary Elizabeth Christened 7th July 1833 Minsterworth, Glos William Henry Christened 25th May 1834 Minsterworth, Glos Alice Christened 12th April 1835 Little Dean, Glos Bridget Davis Christened 22nd May 1836 Little Dean, Glos Henry Jabez Christened 3rd June 1838 Little Dean, Glos
(Unfortunately, Esther is not listed)
There is a Bridget Davies christened on 9th Sept 1798 at Lingen, the daughter of Philip B Davies and Bridget and this fits in (approx) with the age given on the 1851 Census.
This could be Bridget's father: Phillip Bryan Davies christened 23rd June 1765 at Lingen, the son of William Davies and Alice.
A William Davies married Alice Elizabeth Bryan on 6th April 1761 at Lingen.
Finally, there is a record of an Alice Brian christened on 12th Nov 1732 at Lingen, the daughter of Philip Brian and Alice.
Good luck with your search!
Best wishes,
Ju

Ju:
Three extra children who all probably died in infancy! That's the one thing that really gets me when doing the genealogy -- so much infant mortality.
So it is Davies, not Davis. Alot of things are now falling in place. Thanks for clearing that up and giving me leads for two more generations.
Sue:
Thanks for the info on the Drews. The Elizabeth Drew is Elizabeth Morgan who I had no additional info on, so now I have a birth year and location. She died in England and Absalom remarried a Mary Ann Ryder and they immigrated to Westfield, MA in 1874.
Many thanks -- I've gotten more info in one day here than a few weeks surfing aimlessly on the net.
