Workington Lookup - 1841/51 Census - Thomas Stabler
« on: Monday 04 April 05 05:01 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to track down a Thomas Stabler who was born in Workington c1830. He had a brother John and migrated to Australia in around 1854/55.

Any information from the 1841/51 Census (or other sources) on parents, siblings, occupations etc would be appreciated.

Regards
Ian

Thanks Ange

Your assistance is greatly appreciated. It's unfortunate that there is no father's name as it will now be more difficult to trace him back further. Do you have any suggestions?

Also, do have have any knowledge of the size of Workington and what sort of a place it was around this time (or where I can find this info)?

I live in Sydney and it's a little difficult trying to do everything over the net.

Thanks again.

Hi Ian,
What you need to do is try & find the marriage of a Bridget to a Stabler, then try and find his death. You know Bridget was born in Cumberland so that would be a good place to start.
I don't know much about Workington but if you post on the Cumberland board someone probably will.

Thanks Ange. I have found out that her name was Bridget Gribins and his name was Edward Stabler (he was a tanner) from their son Thomas Stabler's death certificate. I can't find the birth or christening of any of their children, which is a bit of a worry.

Thanks again.
Ian.
