AMERICA: Ships coming home to Uk
« on: Wednesday 26 May 04 12:26 UTC (UK) »

Help please!

I've found a few relatives on the Ellisisland site going to New York and have searched a number of sites to try to find passenger lists for their return journey.  I Know they came back cos they died in UK or made a lot of journeys to USA.

Does anyone know where you can find passenger lists to UK, like Southampton or Liverpool ports which are where they sailed from.

Thanx

No records were kept for ships returning to England from Europe but some records were kept for ships coming from further abroad, starting, I think, 1878 or so. These are held at the National Archives but are unindexed and therefore you have to know date and port to find anything! (Or be prepared for a VERY long search).

USA (and Canada) did not keep outbound lists. The records for all ship passengers travelling
between 1890 and 1960 survives within the collection of original British Board of Trade passenger lists. The only place they can be seen is at the Public Record Office in Kew, England.

These lists are not filmed, not indexed and they are not available on-line.
