Help needed for Jones family/wiltshire
« on: Monday 04 April 05 09:30 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone

Just new to this forum. Have been trying to find more info on Elizabeth Jane Jones (or Jane Elizabeth Jones) b.abt 1848 Wiltshire. Found a Jane Elizabeth Jones b.Dec 1848 Bradford on Avon and christened 1 Apr 1850 St.Phillips Birmingham Warwick. Her father is definately Isaac Jones (on her marriage cert) but not sure of mother. The IGI record for the above said mother was Emily.(no surname). Is there anyway I could find out more details to see if this could be my ancestor? Huh Huh
Isaac was noted as a railway worker on her marriage cert. when she married Richard Gold in West Bromwich Sept 1871.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.  I live in Australia so cannot search personally through church records etc.

Hi Jill,

I can only find one marriage for an Issac Jones with an Emily on the same page of the index.  Since there are 4 couples on each page of the index from this period, it's impossible to tell who married who without ordering a certificate.  In any case I think it unlikely that this is who you're looking for since the marriage took place in Abavergenny, Wales.

One suggestion:  I've managed to find the maiden names of two ancestors through census records where the widowed Mother-in-Law is living with the family.  If some kond soul with access to the 1851 or 1861 census can do a lookup for you, you might be lucky.

I've had a look at the 1871 census and found a possible for your family living in Aston, Birmingham:

Isaac Jones Head 62 Electro Plater Born: Worcester, Kings Norton
Emily Jones Wife 59 Born: Warwick, Birmingham
Harriet C Jones Daughter 17 Dressmaker Born: Warwick, Birmingham

I hope someone with access to the earlier census records may be able to help you further.

Good Luck!  It's always difficult tracking down Smiths & Jones or at least proving you've got the right one Smiley

Hi Jill....Welcome to Rootschat....Will see what I can come up with to help here....I have found the family Allan found in 1851 but have my doubts as daughter is listed as Jane Elizabeth and no POB is not listed I cannot tell if it is them but do wonder as same occ is listed 20 years later it certainly not Railway signalman and particularly in 1871 I would erxpect that to be the case...  with such a common name could make me wonder if you may have honed in on the wrong family here..

Here is the 1851 entry for the family Jill mentions

HO107/2058 ED 16 Page 24
Great Hampton Row St George Place
Birmingham

JONES Isaac Head 41 Mar b Kingsnorton Worcestershire Electric Plating
JONES Emily Wife 39
JONES Charles Son 16 Unm Electro Plating
JONES Emily Dau 13 Scholar
JONES Edward Son 6 Scholar
JONES Jane Elizabeth dau 2 At Home

I too like in Oz and do you know you can order parish records to your local LDS Library. It takes a few weeks for them to get them usually depending on where they are. They give you a ring when they get them and keep them about 3 weeks to give you plenty of time to get and go through the films. They only charge a small amount to cover postage for the film and I find the time they keep the film wonderful as it gives me time to organise to get to the city and view the records.

OK Jill I have tracked Elizabeth through the censuses and note firstly that she always appears as Elizabeth and her age and POB are quite constant...She does not appear as Jane in any census record

1871 Elizabeth Jones Servant 23 Unm in  West Bromwich b Chippenham Wiltshire

1881 Elizabeth Gold Wife 33 Mar in Lower Heyford Oxfordshire b Chorsham Wiltshire

1891 Elizabeth Jane Gold Wife 43 Mar in Lower Heyford Oxfordshire b Chorsham Wiltshire

In 1901 Elizabeth J Gold Wife 53 Mar in Lower Heyford Oxfordshire b Chorsham Wiltshire

It would be impossible for anyone to check 1861 without knowing where she is at this stage...Afraid you will have to wait on the indexes at 1837online to be completed.....Please let me know if you requirwe any of the above entries

1851 Census for Chippenham yeilds no Isaac nor Elizabeth Jones
!851 Census for Chorsham does have these entries...I just wish Isaac had a daughter with him....Chorsham and Chippenham are the same Peice Number

HO107/1836 Folio 353 Page 14
Chorsham Wiltshire
JONES Isaac Widow/er 31 Ag. Lab. Chippenham, Wilts.
JONES David 6 Scholar Corsham, Wilts

Of course there is the chance that if the mother died the young children may have been brough up by other relatives...

HO107/1836 Folio 351 Page 11
Chorsham Wiltshire

JONES George 40 Ag. Lab. Chippenham, Wilts.
JONES Mary 40 Tinsbury Somerset,
JONES Sarah 14 At Home Chippenham, Wilts.
JONES Eliza 11 At Home Chippenham, Wilts.
JONES Louisa 8 At Home Chippenham, Wilts.
JONES Elizabeth 3 ? Chippenham, Wilts.
JONES Caroline 2 Chippenham, Wilts.

Analizing all this I would suggest it could be well worth while ordering in the Chippenham and Chorsham Films and wonder if getting a look at the scans  for this 51 entry to ensure this Elizabeth is in fact the daughter of George and not a niece or like may also be beneficial......I think with such a common name you are very fortunate that Elizabeths age and Place of Birth remain constant....All the best with it....Kris  Cheesy

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions and information.  I will print it all out and digest it, then decide what the next move will be.  The info about LDS getting it and holding it is interesting, might be able to organise this  the next time we will be in an area where there is one of their facilities.

Thanks once again, will let you know how I go.
