It has to be either Yorkshire or Derbyshire, and I made an enormous error, she married Alfred IBBERSON from sheffield! now that looks like one of yours does it not! He was my gg grandfather.

Hi Martin

Sorry, I cannot find either Elizabeth or Alfred on the Sheffield 1861 census surname index, nor can I find them on the 1871/81/91/01 census, or find a marriage.

Hi,

The mystery deepens.

I have Alfred on 1871 census in sheffield, though his name at that time was IBBOTSON, the census shows him married to Ann, and with two young children. This is definately my Alfred. However, I know that he married Elizabeth SHORT on 2 June 1864 and that their daughter catherine was born 30 April 1866. What happened to both wife and daughter before 1871, in addition his'new' wife obviously had a child before her marriage to Alfred, by the name of Edward FENNER. All this at a time he was in the 4th Hussars serving in India! He apparently was discharged in 1877.

He was obviously quite a character because he married again in 1923, aged 82, to Eliza Annetts, then aged 21!!!

If anyone out there can help resolve this I would be delighted to hear from you.

Is it possible that the family changed its name from IBBOTSON to IBBERSON to avoid 'scandal' resulting perhaps from Alfreds activities???
