Marriage in Wharfdale YKS
« on: Tuesday 05 April 05 04:37 UTC (UK) »

Which is his wife - Eldred Smith married Sept Quarter 1901 at Wharfedale district to either Lauretta Mary Atkinson or Mary Ann Thurlow, his wife had died by December 1904. Any help will be much appreciated. Cannot find a death for either lady.

Welcome to Rootschat! Grin

Hi, where did you find these references from? If it was from the Free BMD you could consult the GRO Marriage indexes for that year and quarter by cross referencing both the women's names. If one has the same Reference as Elfred Smith then you have a match.

If you do not live in either England or Wales then you can use http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/ This site is the complete GRO index as you would find in the General Register Offices but it is a pay per view site.

Hope this helps you.
Kindest Regards Jen  Cheesy

I have already checked the GRO and both ladies match the number with Eldred Smith so I presume there are two marriages to the page.
Cannot check a census as whoever she is, has died.  Thanks for replying to me. I live in Tasmania.

Hi Kress,

Do you know what Eldred's occupation, address or father's name was?   If so you could apply for the certificate giving both ladies' names and references, but specify that the correct one will have these details.

It was Lauretta Mary

Wharfedale  9a 267   Sep 1901

Interesting on the 1901 Census

Lauretta Atkinson  13 Yks Otley Yorkshire Otley Worsted Spinner

Lauretta Atkinson  35 Yorks Otley Yorkshire Otley

What makes you so sire she died?

ONly 1 Lauretta Smith died in that period 1901-4. Aged 0 in Chesterfield

Eldred Smith remarried February 1904 as a widdower.  I found both the ladies with the same number so presumed there would be two marriages on the one page.  Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

Eldred Smith's occupation is Pork Butcher, the same as his brothers Horace, Herbert & Irvin(e).  Their father had a family business in Bradford.

According to the Yorkshire BMD site http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/ the 1901 marriage was at All Saints, Otley (the parish church) to Mary Ann Thurlow. His 1904 marriage doesn't come up - presumably it wasn't in any of the places that have been indexed.

My sincere thanks to Arthur for solving my problem, I have checked for her death in Bradford and came up with five possible. I do have a copy of Eldred's second marriage which took place in Bradford.
Once again thanks from down under    Kath.
