Driver Family
« on: Wednesday 06 April 05 09:50 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to reseach my descendants and have been having terrible trouble trying to find anything about my great grandfather.  I have been told he came of Bristol, Robert Francis Willard Driver b.1855 approx.  He was a builder/carpenter and may have attended Eton (Eaton) school  He immigrated to Australia or NZ when he was around 18 yrs.   Anyone with information in him or his family would be great.

Hi Yettigirl!

DRIVER doesn't seem to be a local name the to Bristol area (I'm probably way off with this, but there are not many on census returns!)  I didn't find an exact match, but there are Robert DRIVER s elsewhere, especially Lancashire!!

There is a Francis DRIVER in Stroud, Gloucestershire in 1871 and that is about it.  If you have any further information to help pin down your relative could you post it here?  If you know the names of siblings in particular, or ideally parents - I don't ask much do I?

If you know when and where he married, maybe a certificate would give his father's name, which would help.

Anyway, post what you know and we will try to help

There are quite a lot of people named Driver in the Glos 1851 census but none specifically from Bristol.  Apart from Robert do you have any other names?

Hi Sue

Thanks for that.  I don't know for definite if Robert came from Bristol.  There aren't any older family members left to ask.  I did get a copy of the marriage cert but it had nothing as he married in Dunedin, NZ.  I checked with the cemetery here in Dunedin and they told me he had come from England.  He married here an Annie Paris and she was also from England.  I have found the ship she came out along with her family who are Frank, Harriet, Harriet E, Jane, Mahala, Thomas and William x 2.  If you could find anything on this family for me that would be great also.  Families back then used to carry the names down the line, Robert and Annie's children were Ethel Maude Evelyn, William Arthur, Amy Elizabeth, Florence Ann, Alice Maude, Sidney Robert, Ernest Edward and Grace Winnifred.  Maybe some of the Drivers elsewhere in England have some of these names.  He is just a mystery.  I don't know if he had any siblings or even what his parents names are.  Hoping you may come up with something.  Thanks again Eileen

Hi Yetigirl

I can't help thinking that the Lancaster link is significant - there are many DRIVERS in that area.

I am happy to have another look using the names of Robert's offspring as a guide, but I think to be sure you have the right one, eventually you will need confirmation from immigration records (and I know less than nothing about those, sorry!)

Will have another look now

I'm not convinced... Huh Huh

I think the nearest is a Robert Driver b1864 in Greenwich, who is a shipwright's apprentice in 1881.

Interestingly: the first entry for 1871 was a George Robert DRIVER, servant at Ely College, Cambridgeshire - sure you have the right college?  Grin

Also had a look at Francis/ Frank PARIS, but there are only 2 on the returns - one from Demerera, West Indies!  He is on a vessel called India Pearl.

Hi
Robert Driver was in NZ by 1876 as he married here then.  It is so frustrating not being able to find him anywhere.  Thanks again
