Hi Laurence
Elizabeth McVitty nee McCrea is my GGG grandmother. Not sure what info you already have. If you have any other info to add please let me know.

Born: 1819, County Donegal, Ireland

Arrived: January 1877 Melbourne aboard the "Hampshire" along with children Emily, 23 years, George, 18 years and Rebecca, aged 16 years
Married: Pettigo, County Donegal, Ireland to Robert McVITTY

Died: March 1907, Ballarat aged 92 years

Buried: Funeral 30 March 1907, Church of England portion of Ballarat Cemetery (I have a photo of the McVitty "plot" in Ballarat.)

Elizabeth's husband Robert did not come to Australia so I assume that he died prior to 1877. It is believed that he was in the Police Service in Ireland which is mentioned on daughter Catherine's death certificate. (Do you have details on Robert?)

All of Elizabeth's thirteen children emigrated, at different times, and settled in the Ballarat area of Victoria. Her daughter Catherine (my gg grandmother) was the only child to leave Victoria - she went to Sydney NSW.

I also have a photo which I believe is of Elizabeth.

Hi Laurence (& Debster),
I have just come across your correspondence about Robert McVitty. Do you have any more information about him - birth place etc.? I have a Robert McVitty who was a policeman in my tree but a generation (or two) later.
I would love any info. you may have. I have quite a lot of info. on McVitties of Ballintra Co. Donegal (which is not too far from Pettigo) and odd bits of info. on McVitties of Kilbarron and Ballyshannon.
Regards,
Carol

Hi Debbie and Laurence,

I have been looking into a few Donegal McVitty policemen, and found the record of one you may be interested in.

Robert McVitty; age (when joined the R.I.C.) 24; native county Donegal; Religion P (Protestant); married 11/12/1837; Co. of wife, Donegal; by whom recommended Thomas Atkinson Esq. J.P.; Trade or profession farmer; date of appointment 14 February 1828; To what County, Donegal; Promotions etc. Const. 1/9/1840; R to SC. 1/8/49; Pensioned1/12/1853; Pension £26; length of service 25yrs. 8 mths.

Have no idea what the abbreviations on the promotion bit means but I think there might be a problem - what was he doing between 1828 and 1840??!!

I am sure you will have checked the IGI but just in case there is a birth (1st June 1803) and death in Ballymore Donegal ( 1875) of Robert McVitty. I think that is your Robert and this is his son - birth for a Robert McVitty (parents Robert McVitty and Elizabeth McCrea) in Derry 1845. Ballymore is not that far from Derry.

To link the policeman, the dates sort of fit - if he was pensioned off at age 49 he may have been injured and died before 1875 when Elizabeth decided to emigrate with the children.

There is a Thomas Atkinson J.P. buried in St. Ann's Church of Ireland Ballyshannon. He lived in Cavangarden just up the road from where I was born.

I don't think this Robert is one of mine - there were two families but you never know. I knew Reids from Pettigo but back in the 70's, I have lost touch now.

My apologies if I have bored you with stuff you already have, its been some years since your last postings on this subject but it was worth a go!!

Carol.

Hi Carol
Just checked my posting from 2004 (where did that time go?) and I noticed your December 2008 posting on Robert McVitty!

Thank you so much for posting the information about Robert - he has been very elusive to date.  Now I have something more to go on!

Regards
