Looking for information on Sykes family.
James born c.1780 and married Mary Hirst.
Two known children Benjamin born 1808 in Meltham and married Martha Eastwood and Thomas born !809 and married Elizabeth Fluke Parkin, daughter of Esther Parkin, in 1831.
Thomas and Elizabeth had six known children:
Louisa born 1832
Eliza born 1834 and married Benjamin Schofield
Sophia born 1838 and married 1. Thomas Parkin and 2. James Schofield
Thomas born 1841
Elizabeth Ann born 1847 - unmarried
Sarah born 1850/51 and married Thomas Delaney
Up until the early 1950's, the family lived in Meltham and Honley. They then moved to Mossley near Ashton-under-Lyne.

Hi Pauline,
The main things I'm trying to find out is when Thomas b.1809 died and any ancestors of James b. about 1780.
Of course any relatives etc would be a bonus.
I also wanted to see if anyone is researching same family.
Constantly checking records, census, bmd's, parish etc.

My wife’s Family Tree on her mothers side (EASTWOOD) contains several Hirsts and Sykes and indeed a couple of Martha Eastwoods – but as there are all within the West Riding of Yorkshire; do not at the moment think there is any connection with yours.
Jonas Eastwood (1772) married Ann Sykes (1772) on 14th Feb 1797 at Kirkburton
Jonas Eastwood (1832) married Sarah Hirst (1829) on 30th Dec 1853 at Horbury
Luke Eastwood (1826) married Mary Sykes (1826) on 12th Sept 1847 at Huddersfield
But who knows, in the future we may establish a connection.

We have been watching yours and poppy lous correspondence, but at the moment can not see a connection - but that does not mean to say we wont connect up in the future.
Several of our Eastwoods have connections with Almondbury - i.e. - John born 1802 in Almonbury, Jonas born 1772 baptised in Almondbury, his father Jonas baptized in 1750 in Almondbury, etc.
As I said earlier, it would be nice at some time in the future to be able to connect up

Hi,
I am researching the Sykes family of Honley, Golcar, Saddleworth, Ashton under Lyne, and Mossley. John Sykes ( b.c. 1857 in Golcar, s/o John Sykes ) married Isabella Wardle, d/o George and Mary Wardle, in Felling, Durham in 1880. In 1881, they were in Saddleworth. They had their family there. Isabella died in Mossley in 1900 and is buried there. In 1901, her husband and children were still living in Mossley, but in 1906 they emmigrated to New Bedford, MA., USA to join John Sykes' brother, Benjamin Sykes, and his wife, Maria, and son John, b. in Mossley. Benjamin and family lived in Ashton under Lyne in 1891 and then emmigrated to America in 1892. They might have had another brother named James Sykes in Mossley as well.
John Sykes ( b.c. 1857 in Golcar ) had an uncle, Benjamin Sykes( b.c.1823 in Honley ), who had a wife named Ann and a son named Inkerman, living in Saddleworth. This Benjamin Sykes and family were all born in Honley. So right now I am thinking that at least 2 brothers...John and Benjamin Sykes...possibly both born in Honley...ended up in the Mossley/Saddleworth area. Benjamin Sykes had son, Inkerman Sykes. John Sykes had son, John Sykes ( b.c. 1857 in Golcar ), Benjamin Sykes, and possibly James Sykes. John and Benjamin went to America, and James died in Mossley and is buried with his father there.
Buried in Mossley is John Sykes of Vale Cottage, Michelhurst, who died in 1900 at age 72 yrs. ( b.c. 1828 ), with his wife, Ann ( d. 1893 at age 63 yrs...b.c. 1830 ). Also buried with them are James Sykes, their son, who d. 1932 at 60 yrs....b.c. 1872., and his wife, Mary Ann and their daughter, Ethel.
Does anyone have any information concerning this family and its origins? Any help would be very much appreciated. I have alot more info but unfortunately I have no time to type it or I will be late to work. Have a great day everyone!

My Sykes start in Lepton, west yorkshire (so far as I've been able to trace back), with Joseph (b. 1827) and his wife Hannah. Their son Hezekiah (1844 - 1882) was born in High Burton West Yorkshire and their daughter Matgaret (1879) married Arthur Dobson - my G Granddad.
Are there any links with your Sykes at all?
