SS - Thanks for the suggestion. I did wonder about whether it might be 'nsk', but I'm pretty sure it's not P at the beginning.
Russethouse - Thanks for the interesting link. Some of the researchers are looking at their ancestors from Prussia living in Islington working in the leather trade - might be worth contacting, you never know! Although I think I may be clutching at straws Glad to hear I'm not alone
Does anyone have a good map of Prussia in 1830??
Thanks again Julie

Julie, I forgot to mention that to find where my direct ancestor came from I went forward to a later census and found that her brother had mentioned a place name when he was resident away from 'home'
Hope that helps
Good Luck !

Thanks for the map links (they ended up at the same place!). I've had a look, but can't find any likely looking places!! The maps are from 1882, may be I need to look for earlier ones.
His first name on this census is Morris (although his actual name was Maurice and he was also known as Marcus and Moses!) He died on 30th November 1880 in Camberwell. I don't yet know when he came to England, only that is was before 1860, when he married an English woman.
Thanks again Julie

Found one from 1827 - not much luck there either
The only likely place was 'Friesack', and I'm not convinced
If anyone's interested it was at http://www.davidrumsey.com/maps4046.html
