Half a Death Certificate
« on: Wednesday 06 April 05 20:14 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I have half a death certificate. It is for Sheffield. Have the date it was issued and the address of the person who paid for the interment. The person was buried in a family grave. I have looked up the address in trade directories and think that I know the name of the person who paid.
Any ideas please on how to get any futher. Who was buried and where?

hi flame,

sounds like you may have a burial cert, a death cert gives details of the deceased, date, place & cause of death, & the informants details.

as you know the burial date, City & who paid for the interment, i would email the Bereavment Offices of Sheffield City Council (details on their website, just google) explain what info you have, if you can scan the cert & attach to the email i would & what you hope to find out, im sure they should be able to help you.

ive done this a few times myself, & usually receive a reply within 48 hours, but cant vouch for Sheffield, alternatively you could phone the above offices. i dont know if Sheffield has computerisd their interment registers yet, but alot of councils are, hence the usually speedy response.

Good luck.

Hi Sharren,
Thanks for your reply. You taught me something already. So its a burial Cert. I will try what you suggested. I did get in touch with the council about it a few weeks ago but I called it a death certificate. They said it would be a matter of trawling through facts at the archives. But now I know what I've actually got. Hopefully you have solved a problem.

HI Sherren,
Just an update. I did what you said about the cert. and now I know who the person is. He is the person who I thought had paid for the burial. Hosea Tugby unusual eh. He's buried just near me so am going to see the grave next week. Hope there's a headstone. This is my very 1st step forward.
Just wanted to say thanks a million!

hi flame

i'm really pleased for you & what an unusual name.   Shocked

hope there is a headstone, may give his age & other rellies, which will help in searching further back.  the other week i found the grave of an ancester & it was a family plot with 9 other rellies buried there, what a find that was.   Cheesy
hope you get something similiar.

i always use this approach to locate the graves, saves so much time & is useful when someone has died in a place that is at odds with the other info you have on them.

Anyway, let me know how you get on,

Best wishes, Sharren

Hi sharren,
Sorry I spelt your name wrong earlier. Apparently the grave is a family one so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for other names. I'm that exited I feel like going there now. Even though it's getting dark now. I'll have to wait until tommorrow now. Luckily my parents are having my son whilst I'm supposed to be on a course. I think I may just have to not bother going and go grave hunting instead.
I will of course keep you informed.

Hi Sharren,
Went to the graveyard. Took my son, he was in charge of the map reading, if it wasn't for him I would never have found it. It was one of scariest ones I'd seen. Ivy growing all over it took the shape of a man with an afro hairdo. Spent ages trying to pull it off. Ruined my nails. Hosea was married but no children, or none buried with them. It needs futher investigation. I suppose a marriage certificate to confirm the lady maiden name, then maybe a death certificate to find out who buried her might help. Was hoping my son didn't have nightmares about the graveyard, but was educational. It covered nearly every subject. Literacy, maths, history, geography, orienteering and yes even horticulture.

The Cemetery office will probably be able to tell you if there is anyone else in the grave - my great grandfather is buried in a huge cemetery, and after spending hours roaming round without success, contacted the office.  I know - should have done that first ...!  Anyway, I would never have found it because there is no headstone, but they were able to give me the plot number - and much more exciting, the other people in the grave.  There were three others, and it was a great step forward ..!

hi flame,

im glad that you had a succesful outcome, pity about the nails though & got the name of his wife, at least like you say you can look for a marriage & then any children. i must say you sound like me i always take my daughter  with me my sense of direction is atrocious.

just another tip, when i have both dates of deaths for a couple  i tend to get the cert. of the 1 who died last, i usually find if they had children 1 of them will usually have registered the death.

though if you have an approx birthyear for the guy, depends what it said on the headstone, you can always look for his birth cert to locate his parents. with an usual name he shouldnt be too difficult to find, unless its been misspellt.

anyway let me know how you get on

good luck sharren
