Squirrel Hill
« on: Thursday 07 April 05 21:54 UTC (UK) »

Where is Squirrel Hill?

I've found what I think is the baptism of Mary North in 1795 in Squirrel Hill, but I can't find it on the map.

Can someone tell me if it is anywhere near Meltham which is where Mary said she was born on the 1851 census?

Thanks,

Jill

Jill,

I've checked in Bartholomew's and other gazetteers, and looked at the 1:50000 OS map of Meltham. I can find no trace of any such place in the UK or Ireland.

I live only a few miles away but I'm a comer-in as they say round here. However, there are one or two people I can ask when I get the chance. I'll keep you posted, unless someone else finds it first.

Jill,

I've spoken to my friends. They are certain they've never heard of any such place near Meltham.

All I can suggest is looking at the 1:25000 map, or looking further afield.

Sorry,

Squirrel Ditch is now a street, just South of Longley Park. But it may have been something else in the past---it's a strange name, even for Huddersfield Wink.

I've just checked, and it's probably in the parish of Almondbury, like Meltham, so maybe it's worth looking into.

Thanks to Jon and Joe for your help. It seems that Squirrel Ditch is the best bet.
