Colquhoun family -any resource
« on: Friday 08 April 05 15:17 BST (UK) »

Does anyone have any info on the Colquhoun (or Calhoun, Colhoun, Cahoon) family in early 1800s ?
Specifically William (who married Anne Jane Elliot in 1841 at Conway, Convoy, Donegal) and a possible brother Alexander Colquhoun, who had moved to Liverpool by 1841.
But any info welcome.
Regards
Marg

Hi Marg,

http://www.rootsweb.com/~fianna/surname/orphans1.html -
There is mention of a Samuel Colhoun in this URL.  It appears there may be no connection as there is no mention of Alexander. William married in Co. Donegal so there is a possibility that the family came from there but the area where he married is only twelve miles from Co. Tyrone so it might be worth while looking in that county as well. Do you know the religious persuasion of the Colquhoun family ?

Best Wishes,   Christopher

I am related to Martha and Thomas Colquhoun in Liverpool listed by Shirley and am trying to trace his father 'Robert' a farmer.  Thomas was born in Ireland in 1833 but then I am totally stuck - any suggestions?

Dear all

Thanks for replies.  I dont think my Colquhouns are related (at least not directly) to any of these.
Alex Colquhoun b.1791 Ireland married Agnes ? b.1801 Ireland
according to the 1841 census they lived at Sherwood Place, Atkinson Street Liverpool. Alex was a ships' carpenter.

William Colquhoun b. 1813 Ireland married Anne Jane Elliot b 1819 Ireland in Conway Convoy Co. (1841). By 1843, this couple also lived at Sherwood Place Atkinson Street, Liverpool. They had a son who died at 1 day old.  By 1846 they had returned to Ireland (while Alexander and his family remained in England). William and Jane had another son born in Ireland 1846 and then emmigrated to USA and had 6 more children.

If this rings any bells with anyone please let me know.
Cheers

the colquhoun family were protestants who were rewarded for their support by being given land taken from catholics in Ulster .This was known as the plantation of Ulser. Later they were driven out & many went to Cumberland, When the Mersey Was dug out then many went to Liverpool. Some because the were  weavers& liverpool became famous for the import  of cotton from America.
My ancestor James Colquhoun was b.in Donegal in 1756 came to cumbria, became a coal carter &lived & died in Brampton Cumbria
I am trying to find out were in Donegal he was Born. The name was spelt Calhound& he married Mary English in 1809. We suspect he left a wife behind in Donegal

Hi, not sure if this is of any use/good to you. The Colquhouns were a family originally based on and around the river Clyde at Bowling, Old Kilpatrick and surrounding countryside, they have a castle(ruin) just up the road from me called Dunglass. Roundabout the 14th centuary they married into the powerful Lennox family and were granted lands on the shores of Loch Lomond at a place now called Luss. Somehow or other they got involved in a feud with clan MacGregor(and their supporters) and were nearly all(Colquhouns) wiped out at a place called Glen Fruin (Glen of sorrow/tears). They still have a vested interest in Luss, land,island/s, hotels, Church and the like. I'm sure the chief of them lives nearby. Hope i didnt bore you?   Good luck to ye  Wink

My grandmother was Elizabeth Cowan (I don't think that is the correct spelling of her surname) she is supposed to have been born in Midcut, Donegal about 1890.  She married Patrick Quigley of Shantallow, Derry in 1923 at St Eugene's Cathedral.  I am trying to find a birth record for Elizabeth.  At her marriage she gave her father's name as William and his residence as Stranorlar.  Elizabeth had sisters: Maggie and Mary who both married men called Doherty.  I think Mary married a John Doherty from Ballybofe, she had brothers: Willie, John and another brother whose name I don't know.  Willie was a farmer in Stranorlar and John worked in the coal mines in Scotland before going back to Ireland.

Good Luck
Moira
I have just received my grandparent's marriage certificate and my grandmother's maiden name is shown as Crown.  On my father's baptism certificate from the church it is shown as Cowan.  Does anyone know if the names are variations?
Apologies for the incorrect posting.
