Cain family
« on: Saturday 09 April 05 23:53 UTC (UK) »

I am after info on the Cain family from County Meath who moved to England some time around 1850. I have the following census entry from Sheffield Englan in 1861:

CAIN   Edward   50   IRL   County Meath   3490   60B
CAIN   Edward   12   IRL   County Meath   3490   60B
CAIN   Bridget   17   IRL   County Meath   3490   60B
CAIN   Catherine   21   IRL   County Meath   3490   60B
CAIN   John   19   IRL   County Meath   3490   60B
CAIN   Julie   7   LIN   Bourne                   3490   60B
CAIN   Ann   2m   YKS   Sheffield                   3490   60B
CAIN   Ann   40   IRL   County Meath   3490   60B

Edward (50) and Ann (40) are the head of the household and his wifeThe others are their children, most born in County Meath.

The ages are not certain as in 1871, Bridget is recorded as 24, Catherine as 26 and Julia as 18. In 1881, Bridget is recorded as 30. She is also recorded as born in County Mayo in later censuses but I think the 1861 was probably reported by her father and maybe accurate in this regard.

The birth dates are a little difficult to confirm.

However, based on these details, has anyone come across details of Edward and Ann Cain, and their family. Sorry I have no details of the town.

Hello stain,

I looked for Cain in Griffith's Valuation of Co. Meath which took place in 1855. There were no Cains although the name appeared in several other counties. In most case where I've noticed an Irish born family appearing in an English census there are usually people with the same surname left behind in the same county in Ireland. I have a hunch that the name Cain may have changed from Kane in Ireland to Cain in England as there were several Kanes in Co. Meath.
