I am looking for my paternal grandfathers brother James Henry Thwaites born in Bury, Lancashire in 1871.
Family stories tell that James joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, but at the outbreak of WW1 he came back to Lancashire and joined the British Army. He married Margaret Eugenie Griffiths in 1902 in Salford, Lancs, I am therefore assuming that he joined the Mounted Police sometime between 1902 and 1914.
Although I cannot find him in the 1901 British census and have tried the Canadian databases which I have seen on this site.
Any ideas anyone?
Any help would be appreciated
Thankyou
georgie

Georgie,
Have you seen the RCMP website:
http://www.rcmp.ca/history/history_e.htm
If you click on the link for genealogy, it gives an email address for requesting information about relatives who served with the RCMP prior to 1920. It says their index is not complete but it would be worth a try.
Regards, Josephine

Hello
here is a reference to the arrival of people named Thwaites into Canada
Covering the periods, 2 Jul to 2 Oct 1908, 25 Jul 1909 to 26 Apr 1910 and 17 Sep to 13 Oct 1910
Thwaite Wm. 34 England 28 August,1908 Tunisian 005-005 Quebec Ports T-4759
Thwaites Alice England 25 July,1909 Corsican 007-007 Quebec Ports T-4762
Thwaites Eva Canada 25 July,1909 Corsican 007-007 Quebec Ports T-4762
Thwaites Herbert 7 England 23 September,1910 Virginian 013-00C Quebec Ports T-4772
and here is a possiblity for your James Thwaites
Legal Land Description ~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~ 1 NE 31 39 25 W3 Part Section Township Range Meridian Reference: Liber: 646 Folio: 233 File reel number: C-6450 Names: James Henry Thwaites
This land is south of Lloydminster (on the Alberta/ Saskatchewan border) and the homestead grant was approved in 646 Dec. 01, 1914 - Dec. 11, 1914 C-6449-C-6450 so was likely filed in about 1909. The last Canadian Census available is the 1906 Prairie Province Census and I can't find him there. If he came after 1906 then maybe the 1911 census will help if and when it is released by our goverment.
Hope this helps some
Good luck
Thelma

Hello Thelma,
Thankyou very much for the information.
Do you know if and when your 1911 census will be available, or is it the same as here in the UK not for public viewing for 100 years after, which makes ours due out in 2011.
Once again thankyou, much appreciated.

Hello
there is a bill before our government at the moment to release the 1911 census to the public but it is unlikely to pass before the parliament adjourns for the summer. That means back to the legal challenge in the fall and waiting to see if it is successful.
I believe that the Canadian census is considered public domain after 90 years but our current government is refusing to honor the legislation that defines this. There is a huge wave of "privacy rights" here at the moment. I totally agree with protecting priviliged information (credit cards, banking, etc) but fail to see how records that are 90 years old can be a threat.
Anyway, apparently the 1911 census has already been scanned and when it is released it will likley be placed on the government website and then genealogical societies will begin transcribing it for easy searching.
When that happens I'll let you know.
Thelma
