Can anyone please try and find census entries for him in 1851 and 1861. His first wife Jane died in 1848 and in 1871 he is shown as married to Mary Ann (formerly Dixon).
He married Mary some time between 1848 and 1862 (I have a birth certificate for this year) but I suspect it was some time around 1857 from the children on the 1871 census.
I've had no luck with 1837online in trying to find the marriage and I'm hoping the census might give me a nearer date.
James Penn age 40 Wigton - Coal Miner Mary Penn " 38 Ellenborough - wife James Penn " 4 Ellenborough - son Henry Penn " 2 Crosby - son Thomas Penn " 1 Crosby - son Robert Dixon " 11 Ellenborough - son Jane Dixon " 8 Ellenborough - daughter
This seems to be your family. If I find the dates of the marraiges I'll post back.
I have been looking at the Civil Registration Index for -1837 to 1983 and found the following:
Marraiges
1) Vol 25 pg 67
James Penn and Jane Dixon September Quarter 1841 Cockermouth
2) Vol 10b Pg667
James Penn and Mary Ann McKenzie March Quarter 1885 Cockermouth
No.1 You know James and Jane's last child together, Jane, was born in 1853 so if Jane died it could have been in childbirth but I could not find any death record for a Jane Penn or Dixon for that year or 1854. The closest I could find was for a Jane Dixon who died in 1857 in Whitehaven Vol 10b Pg 309.
Maybe James and Jane just parted and Jane remarried as there is a record of a Jane Penn marrying in 1854 (Vol10b pg 621) - only two other names appear on the same page, a Joseph Pattinson and a Sarah Dunglinson.
No.2 I could find any close or logical matches any earlier than this. It doesn't seem likely to be them if their first child was born in 1857 unless they just decided to marry later in life?
what area / addresses do you have for the 1861 or otherwise. The 1851 is usually published in paper form and I have some of the transcripts for this area but not all - unfortunatley it isn't searchable!

Thanks Frank - afraid I don't have this part of the 1851!
Gillj - if you don't get a response to the post it is available to buy via http://www.cumbriafhs.com/. Afraid I don't know of any other sites where it is available as a lookup and it isn't one of the transcripts covered by Rolygrigg's name and place index http://homepages.tesco.net/~rolygrigg/.

Thanks for all the info supplied everyone. I'm going to try and piece it together and have another search on 1837online for James and Mary Ann's marriage as I've nnow narrowed down the year range.
