James MINETT - gold miner
« on: Friday 15 April 05 14:43 BST (UK) »

Can anyone suggest how I can find more information about James Minett. He emigrated from Thornbury, Glos to New Zealand - via New South Wales, where he married in 1861.

His 1st daughter was born in NSW, and then 5 children were born at Ross, NZ between 1867 and 1878.

Most of his children married back in NSW, and his wife died there in 1908. James is not buried with his wife, and I have been unable to find a death registration for him in NSW, so he appears to have died in New Zealand.

Can anyone suggest sources that would give details of his death. I understand that the Ross Cemetery records were destroyed by fire some time ago.

Death records, along with Births and Marriages are held in New Zealand by the Department of Internal Affairs.  Go to Cyndi's List - New Zealand and that will lead you on to them.
They will do a search for you for a fee and send you copy of death certificate

Thanks for the suggestion of Cyndi's List - a site that I have not used for some time - but it has certainly provided me with a few interesting ideas, if nothing concrete about James Minett.

Presumably there are no BMD indexes widely available for NZ. I would prefer to look at an index to make sure that James did die in NZ before I ordered a certificate.

Ruth

Let me check a few things at the library they may know where there would be death records for the coast (west coast) unfortunately it is 7am here so they won't be open yet.  Afraid genealogy is a bit of hit and miss over here still - Internal Affairs will search for you however why pay if you canget it for free.  The cemetery records you said were burnt but you could always
try the church.  Ross is in the Diocese of Christchurch they keep archives of parish records in the Christchurch office and will do a search for you - I'll look up their currect address and get back to you.
