Hi Could some one please look up for me my gg grandmother Keziah Ashton. I have found her living with her son and family in Belvoir Terrace Peterborough, Her Name was listed on the 1901 census as Kaziah Lane,
I have also found a very old military discharge paper for 8124 private William Lane of the Grenadier regiment of guards who was enlisted at Cork on 18th January 1855 age 18yrs. and was discharged on completion of his 10 yrs. service on 12th. January 1865 at London age 28yrs. I believe that at some stage William and Kaziah married it could have been in Eynsham oxon. any help with this enquiry is very much apriciated

Thank you for your very prompt reply.
can I ask if there is any further information available about William Lane, dob, death and where if possible Keziah was living with her son ( my g grandfather ) by 1881 census the rest of the family were burried in Peterborough but I havnt found Keziah yet. and keziah doesnt apear on the 1891 census.
it would be very interesting to know as much as poss about her husband
once again many thanks for your help

Hi Jim,
It seems that you have quite a puzzle here. You don't say where you found the information about William Lane's military service and how you know that he is "the right William Lane". Using the info you gave about Peterborough,
I found a Keziah Lane(in 1881 Cen.) living with her son and family, BUT,
there is a big problem Huh

. This Keziah with son, James Ashton, is 60 years old, which means she was born about 1821. The William Lane whose army record you have would have been born about 1837-38, which makes him a lot younger than Keziah and only about 5 years older than her son. Is this likely? Is there any possibility that you have the wrong William Lane? It is a rather common name.
I did a bit of searching in FreeBMD. Found a William Lane born in Peterborough, Mar. quarter 1838(Vol.15 P. 344) (
the one that served in the army?) Also a death of a William Lane June Q. 1865 (3b 155) and death of a Keziah Lane, Sept. Q. 1898 (3b 143), age 78 (right age for the lady who was living with son James in 1881 Cen.), but if you found her still alive in 1901, it can't be her. Huh

Aaaargh! There's something very wrong here. Your best bet would be to send for the marriage cert. as that will give the
name of William Lane's father, and William's place of birth and age. Once you have that info. you can trace William's birth and ancestry.
Someone has sent you one possible marriage. You might check 1837online to get the volume and page numbers and to see if there are any other likely marriages. I could not find any on FreeBMD, but it is not yet complete.

Hi Carmela
thank you for your reply. yes I know it sounds very strange but I am certain we are talking about the same Keziah acording to my records she was baptised in Ensham (Eynsham) oxford 1820 and yes she was about 40 when she married William Lane he was 23 they married 11th September 1860 Saint Dunstan. Stepney, London. I found his military discharge record in with my Grandfather's papers some years ago, but at that time none of it made sence and I didnt have a clue who he was. it was only this week when looking at some records concerning my g grandfather James William Ashton who lived in Belvoir terrace Peterborough I saw Keziah Lane living with them and spent a sleepless night trying to remember the name on these discharge papers, low and behold it was "William lane" so I posted all of his details number rank Name etc and some one came back with all th details of their marrage, strange as it is
I do know William was born in the parish on nunney town of Froom Somerset although I do not have a date I do have an extreamly good description of him from his military record :-eg height, eye colour, right down to the fact he was a labourer before joining up age 18. Keziah on the other hand I believe was age 61 in 1881( not 50 as the records show) know nothing about except she had an eligitimate child when she was 22 c1842 who was my g grandfather James William Ashton who she was living with at least on the night of 1881 census by the 1891 census she was no longer living with them. I assumed because of that she had passed away however it seems not if she died age 78 that would be c1878. Irealy do apriciate all this help and it would be nice to know what happened to the pair of them if possible, any info is helpfull.

From your information regarding Frome, I am guessing this is Keziah in 1871. Looks like William was dead by then. Do you know what the connection is with the Brooks family, or whose child Clara is? Could she be Kezias?

Looks like William Brooks may have married Elizabeth LANE - could be Williams sister?
