CONCHER & DURHAM FAMILIES
« on: Sunday 17 April 05 01:04 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to link my gg grandfather, James BEATTIE, b abt 1811 in Urr, Kirk. to new research I have made.

On IGI I found a Margaret BEATTIE, ch 1818, whose parents were James BEATTIE and Janet CONCHER. I wonder if she is the sister of my James BEATTIE.   The date is good.

She apparently married a Hugh DURHAM in 1843 (IGI) in Kirk. and produced 8 children between 1844 and 1861.

On the 1851 census Hugh (35) is a farm servant in another household while a Margret BEATTIE (32) lives at a separate address with James BEATTIE (69) and 4 DURHAM children.

Does anyone have a connection to  either a CONCHER or DURHAM family?

As always any help would beappreciated.      Annette.

Anenette,

The IGI lists the following three children for James Beattie & Janet Coucher -

Jane Beattie - born May 4, 1823, Kirkgunzeion, Kirk., SCT
Jannet Beattie - born Nov 28, 1809, same birth place
Margaret Beattie - born April 26, 1818, same birth place  -

no James listed, but perhaps an omission or mistake by transcriber?

good luck,

Drakes,

Thankyou again for your attention.

More digging is required for James. Would be nice to think the transcriber had made a mistake.    In genealogy we all live on hope.

Drakes,

On closer perusal I realise that my James BEATTIE has named 3 of his children,   Jannet, Jane and Margaret.  Maybe they were  just common names at the time but on the other hand, named after his siblings.   Perhaps!!!

Annette,
I would pursue this one - sounds like a lot of the pieces fit - I do wish they had been a bit more inventive/unique with naming -  Smiley cetainly would have made my finding them a bit easier....

Drakes,

I hate to admit how inexperienced I am because I have never listed the surname and parish on the IGI omitting any other info.   I just did this and found a James BEATTIE ch 1812, Kirkgunzeon.   I have always been under the impression that he was born in URR but  the 1851 Scot. census lists his birthplace as Kirkgunzeon.
How great is this.   Definately looking promising.
I have rambled on and you probably did not need all this.
Thanks again,  Annette

Hi,

My mother in law was Margaret Conchar Hogg born in Dumfries I think, apparently Conchar is a family name but not sure which part of the family. She was born 1921 and died in 1997. Do you think there could be a connection somewhere.

Hello Jean,

I fiddled about on family search but could not find your Margaret at all.

It is difficult going back the 100 years and linking anyone together.
It is an unusual name - Concher,  and quite probably may be related to this family somewhere.

We will keep looking and one never knows, one day someone will pop up and surprise us.

Thankyou for replying,

Annette
