Help - Where do I start?

Hi - I'm new to this aspect of genealogy and would be most grateful if anyone could give me some pointers as to where to search for my ancestor's emmigration to America.

He is Alfred Richard DOUTHWAITE b. 1855 Islington.  I knew from the family bible that he had died in Chicago in 1883 and I managed to find him on the 1880 US census living in Beaverhead, Montana. but have no idea at what point he moved to the US.

Where do I start?  I am also curious to know how I could find out about his death aged 28 in Chicago.  If anyone knows anything about the US records, I would love to hear!!

I found


1 Alfred Douthwaite showed on their records, as
Arrival date: 30 May 1879
Age: 26
PO Departure: London
PO arrival: New York
Ship Name: California
I have NO idea if this is indeed your Alfred.

Thank you very much for that, Valerie!  
That gives me something to work on - the age is not far out and as he had been living in London, it would make sense that he could have left from a London port.  He was certainly the only Alfred Douthwaite from England on the 1880 census.  Luckily Douthwaite is not that common a surname!!  I shall follow it up further.
