Can anyone help?
« on: Sunday 17 April 05 12:09 UTC (UK) »

We are trying to research the family tree, and was wondering if anyone can help with this problem we have.

The problem is:

A member of our family who we are unsure of his first name but had the surname of Bright, who was a male b. 1865 - 1890, emigrated to South Africa between 1890 - 1910. We think that he made the journey on his own. He was born in Needingworth, Huntingdonshire, and his father was William Bright and his mother was Elizabeth or Rebecca.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Hi there,
I have tried to have a  look in the archives without success. The time period and lack of detail is too big a span for me to search. I have looked for the obvious without luck. From the 1881 William - plenty of them in SA, Charles - ditto, and Bernard - none! if you are able to give me some more details I will try again - also which area he lived in would help.
Thanks
Ruth

Thank you for your reply.

The only information that we have about this person, was that one of my great grandmother's brother or half brothers emigrated to South Africa. The only first names that we have for her half/brothers are Bernard b. abt 1889 (Brother, his mother would be Elizabeth), Charles Arthur b. abt 1876 and William b. abt 1868 (both half brothers and mother would have been Rebecca). The father to all mentioned was a William Bright. A family member told us that this person had emigrated sometime over  90 years ago and this was said in 1986. All of the above had the surname of Bright and they where all born and lived in Needingworth, Huntingdonshire and the surrounding areas.

Unfortuneatley this is all the information that we have to go on, and the person that originally told this information to the family has since passed away.

Hope that you can help?

Thanks.

Hi Cottingham,
Reading your posting, I didn't see any mention of the South African wars. Perhaps we/our archives have something for you.

Whilst in South Africa, last year '04, I came across a British Cemetary out in the middle of nowhere. This is quite commomn in the "war" area's. Most of the names and dates were from around the turn of the century.

I did take a couple of photo's of the names that were clear. I know Webster, is not the name you are looking for, but I though this may be of interest to you.

  Good Luck.     Lesanne.   Wink

Hi, I am just mapping this family for a friend who is related to the Bright family. Could the male who emigrated be Bertrand Bellamy Bentley Bright (what a great name!). The reason I ask is that he seems to vanish from the census records prior to 1901.

Regards
Kevin.

I think maybe I have some good info for you!
My GGGrandfather: William Bright b. 1845 St Ives Huntingdon   Wife: Rebecca Prime b. 1843 Barley, Herts died: 1878  Married: 1867 - St Ives
(he remarried to Elizabeth "Lissie" Bentley b. 1858 (their first child born 1882).
The names of the male children he had with Rebecca are:
William Bright b. 1846 Needingworth, Huntingdon
Charles A. Bright b. 1877 Needingworth Huntingdon
Both are missing on 1901 Census in UK
The names of the male children with Lissie:
Bertrande B. Bentley Bright b. 1884 (see a lot of searches for him)
Bernard B. Bentley Bright b. 1889
William Bright b. 1845 was a coal dealer.  My GGrandmother daughter of William & Rebecca left at 15yrs old to USA as a stowe away (things must not have been so good at home with his new wife popping out babies almost every year!)
Pretty much my side all left the home soon after his remarriage.  I found them as live in maids, etc.
(1851 Census) Williams father: Francis Bright b. 1808 Needingworth   Mother: Elizabeth (Maiden name points to "DAY") b. 1806 Needingworth, Grandfather: John b. 1754 or 1764 Needingworth.  Let me know if you have any more questions if these are you people!

Hi,

Thank you for the information about this part of the family.

Think we are in touch on another chat here, about the same Bright family.

The reason I was asking in this chat, was that a member of the family once said that they thought that one of my great grandmother's (Olive Berenice Bentley Bright) brothers/half brothers had emigrated to South Africa and I was wondering if any one knew any information about him, or could put me in the right direction to source information about him.

Hope this helps.

While looking around the Internet today I came across this website.  It could already be yours or you may already know about it but I thought I would post it anyway since you are researching: BENTLEY

http://www.westridingbentley.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/

Hope it's new info for you or something that helps in your searches.
